Description

"Put this down in your account..." said Alhaji Mahmud, handing a bundle of cash to the young man sitting in the parlor. Maheer stood up, walked over, received the money from his father, turned it around in his hands, and went back to his seat. He scratched the back of his neck with a small smile and said, "Well, I pray I don't use this to fund my own wedding expenses."

Hajiya Hajarah shook her head with a gentle smile and a soft voice, "Well, you are closer to it anyway..."

Alhamdulillah, looking at the young lady sitting on the carpet who couldn't be more than twenty-two years old, Alhaji Mahmud said, "May Allah the Almighty bless this, My Daughter."

She kept her gaze fixed on the floor, playing with the edge of her small veil, saying nothing. Hajiya Hajarah said, "Well, get up and go to sleep..."

Only then did she lift her large eyes, looking at her parents, and said, "Good night." Alhaji Mahmud and Hajiya Hajarah replied together, "May you wake up in safety." She looked at her older brothers sitting in the big parlor, bid them good night too, stood up, headed for the door, and left the room.

Hajiya Hajarah let out a sigh and softly said, "Alhamdulillah, may Allah Almighty safely show us this time, may He cover our flaws and provide for us beyond our imagination..."

Maheer looked at her in surprise but said nothing. She smiled at him, having understood his thought, and said, "And who else would it be for? I am going to marry off my lastborn and only daughter."

Alhaji Mahmud added, "The wedding date was fixed for the same day as yours, servant of Allah."

Maheer was a bit surprised and said, "Oh, I didn't know! Well, may Allah keep us alive and well until then." Usman and Umar, who were sitting in the parlor, responded with, "Ameen Ya Allah."

Maheer stood up, bade his parents good night, and headed upstairs. His younger siblings followed him, while Umar slipped into his bedroom downstairs.

She was standing on the walkway leading to her bedroom, leaning against the wall, when Maheer walked up to her, looked at the tears in her eyes, and asked in surprise, "What happened?"

As if waiting for that, she burst into tears and dropped to the floor. Usman walked over, looked at her, and asked, "What's wrong?"

With a trembling voice, looking at him, she said, "So now they are going to marry me off? A little girl like me, Yaya?"

Usman walked past Maheer straight to his room. Maheer crouched down, facing her, and said, "Who said you are getting married? You're just going on a brief holiday and coming back; we can't do without your cooking in this house."

She began to wipe her tears slowly, looking at him. Maheer smiled and said, "Well, but aren't you the one who brought this man to our house in the first place, or did someone else bring him?"

She looked at the money in his hand, stood up, and said, "Well, you better give me that money to put in my account before you go and spend it. I don't trust you with money..."

He opened his mouth in shock, while she quickly walked away laughing. He shook his head and headed to his room.

Just as she finished preparing for bed, her phone on the mirror ledge started ringing. She walked over, picked it up, looked at the screen, and seeing who was calling, answered it with a soft greeting. In his cool voice, he responded. Softly, she said, "Good evening, sir..."

Calmly, he replied, "Evening, Mayraah." As if he could see her, she lowered her gaze because her heart fluttered hearing him say her name. He asked, "Are you done with your Defense slide?"

She answered, "No, I want you to look it over for me first so I can continue."

He said, "Oh, that is thoughtful of you..."

They both fell silent. After a few seconds, he asked, "How are Ammi and the family?"

She replied, "They are fine."

He said, "Maa sha Allah. I am traveling tomorrow, so I'm going to sleep early. Is there anything else you want to tell me?"

She shook her head softly and said, "No... May Allah wake us up in safety."

He said, "Ameen. Good night." With that, she ended the call. She looked at her phone screen, utterly stunned—meaning he expected her to bring up the subject of the bride price money that had been delivered, and he wasn't going to mention it himself! She tilted her head, put the phone down, said her prayers, and crawled under the duvet.

2. Summary

This excerpt from a Hausa romantic-drama novel centers around Mayraah, the pampered lastborn and only daughter of the wealthy Alhaji Mahmud and Hajiya Hajarah ("Ammi").

  • The Engagement Announcement: The family discusses the delivery of Mayraah's kudin aure (bride price), revealing that her wedding has been scheduled for the exact same day as her older brother Maheer's wedding. Mayraah is overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and denial about getting married so young, while her brothers tease and comfort her.
  • The Mysterious Fiancé: Mayraah receives a late-night phone call from her strict yet caring fiancé, who happens to be her university lecturer, Dr. Musharraf (Dr. M-Abdallah). He checks in on her academic progress (her defense slide) and gently presses her about whether her family has told her the wedding details.
  • University Drama: The next day at the university, news of Mayraah's upcoming marriage spreads. A classmate named Badiyya—who secretly harbors feelings for Dr. Musharraf—is devastated by the news. Meanwhile, Mayraah and her classmates face Dr. Musharraf’s strict attendance policy. Mayraah is forced by her peers to act as their representative and beg the lecturer for attendance grace.
  • Private Interaction: In Dr. Musharraf’s office, a tender, flirty, yet tense dynamic plays out between the lecturer and his young student-fiancée, ending with him checking her slides and whispering "I love you," causing her to panic and trip in shyness. Outside, a heartbroken Badiyya reacts with extreme jealousy upon learning about Mayraah's engagement.

3. Description & Setting

  • Setting: A mix of an affluent, bustling family home in Kano (featuring a neighborhood well-known to the family since childhood, complete with charity water pumps and crowds of people) and a university campus department/lecture hall.
  • Atmosphere: Warm family banter contrasting with domestic tension, academic strictness, secret romances, and underlying rivalry/jealousy.

5. Comments & Literary Themes

  • The Dynamic of Age and Marriage: The story highlights the cultural tradition of early or arranged marriages in northern Nigerian settings, contrasting Mayraah’s internal view of herself ("a little girl") with her family's readiness to transition her into adulthood.
  • Power Dynamics in Romance: The "Lecturer-Student turned Fiancé" trope adds a layer of suspense, workplace tension, and sweet vulnerability. Dr. Musharraf commands absolute respect in the academic space, yet completely softens around Mayraah.
  • Foreshadowing Conflict: Badiyya’s intense emotional breakdown over the engagement hints at future obstacles, drama, and sabotage attempts within the university setting due to jealousy over Dr. Musharraf.

6. Conclusions

This chapter expertly blends lighthearted family humor with romantic tension and subtle dramatic irony. It sets up multiple plot threads: Mayraah’s internal resistance to growing up, her hidden relationship with her intimidating lecturer, and the brewing envy from Badiyya.
