CHAPTER ONE
He gave her a long look loaded with deep meanings. Indeed, if he kept looking at Zahida the way he was currently feeling inside, anything could happen! Goosebumps broke out all over his body instantly, and sweat began to pour from him so heavily that it dripped as though water had been splashed on his body. He thought a long time had passed since that incident. He had assumed that years ago, this illness he carried had vanished. Alas, he was deceiving himself; the last time he experienced such a thing was eight years ago! Could he really be the one?
Zahida wrinkled her nose and said lazily, "Well, I can just leave and come back tomorrow."
He swallowed hard through a dry throat and kept looking at her, "Perhaps you could just wait inside the room. I don’t think he will take more than five minutes to arrive."
She leaned her back slightly against the chair she was sitting on and softly uttered, "If those five minutes pass and he hasn't arrived, honestly, I might just give up. In life, I despise lack of organization. Even before going anywhere, I realized you people are not prepared to work with us."
He closed his eyes in inner annoyance, but Zahida had completely left him speechless. So, trying to smooth things over, he said, "Please bear with us. This is not how we operate; we just made a major mistake here."
She didn’t even bother looking at him; she simply closed her eyes until someone walked into his office with a greeting. Ali looked at Hafiz and said in a stern voice, "Hafizu, what kind of nonsense is this? You can see this guest came all the way from Yamai, and she even told me she wants to leave today, yet you completely wasted her time and upset her."
Hafizu bowed slightly and softly uttered, "Please forgive me, Your Excellency. An emergency delayed me on the way, and I also came with terrible news. If you could just give me ten minutes, let's have a private discussion before anything else."
Ali let out a short hiss and said, "Look, Hafizu, we have a client here. So, put all terrible news aside. Will she be eating garlic and ginger?"
Hafizu wiped his sweat and added, "Well, maybe she can extend our time by another week, Your Excellency, but currently, not a single bag is on the ground."
Zahida wrinkled her nose slightly and said, "No problem, I am traveling today, but Insha Allah I will be back in two weeks. When I return, we can do this business."
Upon saying that, she stood up to leave the office. He also hurriedly stood up and followed her. When she reached her car and stopped, he also stopped nearby and said, "Hajiya Zaheedah, what about your phone number? You see, when the goods are available, I can just call you, right?"
She shot him a piercing glance and angrily replied, "I don't think a phone number brought me here; my own feet brought me. You don't have to strain yourself looking for me on the phone—I will return with my feet."
He raised an eyebrow slightly, showing discomfort at her words, as his pride flared up. He shrugged his shoulders indifferently, and without responding to her remark, he stated, "We look forward to serve u better."
She adjusted the brooch pinned to her shirt and said, "Thank u."
Smiling, he replied, "Ur most welcome."
Saying that, he simply turned back into his office without looking back at her.
Hafizu returned to where he had left him. Ali cast a calm look at him and frantically asked, "Hafizu, what is it?"
Hafizu wiped his sweat and said, "Your Excellency, neither the truck of garlic nor the truck of onions has arrived. The person we bought them from has his phone switched off! My body is utterly cold. We bought twenty trailers of each! We have never done business with him before, Your Excellency; we only transacted over the phone. I checked WhatsApp and he has blocked me! I am afraid, Your Excellency—we poured in millions of naira. We must not end up like a cooperative savings scheme where there is no cash left to withdraw!"
Ali stepped backward in panic, his heart beating furiously. He didn't really know the man; they had only spoken on the phone, trading together for six months without Ali ever asking about his background, trusting that there was trust between them. But why was his head spinning right now? Frantically, he grabbed his phone to check if he could get the number, but the answer was the same as before—the phone was switched off.
A heavy wave of sweat broke out over him, plunging him into confusion. Sitting down, he said in a daze, "I didn't realize the magnitude of our foolishness until now. What links Kano and the Niger Republic apart from traveling to see everything with your own eyes? Truly, signs show that Mariri has cheated and defrauded me in a way I will never recover from! Aside from my nine hundred million naira and something spent on garlic and onion, I gave him fifty million naira three days ago for the farm I want to open so he could bring cattle from their country. Since that day, I haven't reached his phone except through another line he used to call me, claiming he was sick. Apart from the money for the raw plastic I ordered, I don't have even ten million naira across all five of my bank accounts. Where do I even begin if this turns out to be true?"
Hafizu sprang to his feet in panic, trembling as he said, "Your Excellency, we are ruined! Where do we even start fixing this mess? Wallahi, my mind is completely scattered."
Ali held his head, closed his eyes, and uttered the phrase Innalillahi wa inna ilaihiraji'un (Surely we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return).
After twenty minutes of silent sitting, Ali gathered his courage and said, "Hafizu, when destiny approaches a believer, he does not panic over it. Furthermore, you and I have no trick to fix this since it is what Allah has decreed. Even when I look back, I am an orphan with no father. When I grew up, my inheritance did not contain even a single kobo; it was completely gone. Aside from the farmland my father gave me before his death, I inherited nothing else. Allah blessed that farm. If I remember correctly, right after my first degree, I abandoned my studies and sold that farmland for not more than eight hundred thousand naira to dive into this business. Until now, for nearly eight years, I have never encountered a loss; I have only seen continuous growth. Whoever wealth has been given to knows the reason it was taken back from me. Therefore, I will say nothing except Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah). I have wealth ranging from plots of land to houses and other golden assets, so I will not show ingratitude to Allah. If this wealth is my portion, it will return no matter how far away it grazes; but if it is not my portion, I have no power to bring it back no matter how capable I am."
Hafizu nodded with newfound reassurance and said, "Your Excellency, in all the people I have ever associated with, I have never met someone with such steadfast trust and fear of Allah as Aliyu Haidar. May Allah multiply back to you what you lost in this business."
Ali smiled—though he didn't know where the smile came from, as it certainly didn't mean he felt no pain or absolute inner peace. He tidied up and left the office after warning Hafizu strictly not to let anyone else hear of the matter.
He entered his house in a rush. Anyone who didn't know Ali well would never realize he was in distress because of his constant smiling face. But because wives are unlike anyone else, Amirah sensed that something was bothering him, though she did not attempt to ask him what the problem was, knowing that unless he felt like it, he would never speak of it.
He walked straight into the bathroom and let the shower run over him from head to toe. He closed his eyes as the water crashed down forcefully, feeling the intense heat piercing him everywhere. He exhaled a hot sigh and muttered the name of Allah in his heart. Truly, if this turned out to be true—that Mariri had defrauded him—he doubted anything could ever reverse his loss except the will of Allah. In Mariri's hands, he had pure funds exceeding six hundred million naira. In this manner, he could say he had poured all his wealth into circulation, only for it to vanish into thin air! Was this the exact reason Mariri never accepted bank transfers and insisted strictly on cash?
He snapped his eyes open, visualizing the cunning trap Mariri had slowly laid for him without him realizing it. Mariri had let him make good profits in their early dealings so he would grow accustomed to him, and then swept away all his funds in one devastating blow! He would not launch an endless investigation; he would only be wasting ten to fix something beyond repair. Therefore, concerning this wealth, he would not discuss it with anyone; if it was his destiny, it would return by the grace of Allah.
He finished his bath and stepped out as if nothing was troubling him.
As usual, early in the morning, he dressed impeccably in luxurious attire. Ali was a man who loved fashion and pristine cleanliness. His bathroom could pass for someone's resting place because of how clean it was. Not even Amirah entered his room to lie down or do anything other than cleaning duties.
She served his food. Without argument, he sat down and nibbled at it. Watching his mood, she asked, "What is wrong? Since yesterday, I noticed you are not in a cheerful mood."
He flashed a short smile and said, "There is worry, Ameerah, but don't worry—whatever you see has simply passed."
She smiled too, "You are a person whose virtue is the quick ability to let things pass from your mind. That is the reason I love you more each day. I am sure whatever you haven't told me is simply because you don't want me to worry. May Allah relieve you of your troubles."
He smiled and softly replied, "Ameen, Ameerah."
They exchanged smiles, and looking at her, he said, "Ameerah, please bear with me. I have no appetite at all. I am just begging for your prayers that whatever is good for me, Allah will make it manifest."
She nodded in sympathy for her champion. Gently, she reached out and stroked the side of his face, saying, "Aliyu Haidar, bear with whatever it is. I won't force you to tell me, but I trust you. I am sure you will overcome whatever it is."
He reached out, stroked her head, and stood up to kiss her forehead. "I am leaving."
She stood up as well, slipped her hand into his, and passionately said, "Haidar, until when will you fulfill my rights that are upon you? You know wallahi I desperately need you—it has been nearly four months!"
A bitter smile crossed his face, "Insha Allah I will, just bear a little longer, okay?"
From there, they walked out to the courtyard where he kept his cars. He chose his favorite, had his driver drive, and took his seat in the owners' corner.
Zahida (whose real name was Yusrah, the name Ali called her by) let out a strange laugh and said, "Your work has begun to manifest concerning him, Zuwairah. I promise you, Haidar will eventually be reduced to nothing. At first glance, he was completely captivated by me, and wallahi he will regret it! I will ruin his world. Besides, I have neither shame nor fear of anyone; my name was long ago ruined in high society!"
Zuwairah let out a breath and said, "I don't want anything that will harm Haidar, Yusrah. If I tell you the truth, apart from what happened between us, there was another bad trait of his that I framed him for. For God's sake, drop this matter."
Yusrah hissed and replied, "Well, unless you aren't of my blood, I will show no mercy to his world. Wallahi, I will shatter the peace of mind of his entire family!"
Zuwairah fell silent, forcing Yusrah to end the call while wiping away tears of frustration over Haidar the two-faced, as she called him.

CHAPTER TWO
Yusrah arrived home in a fury. All of Zuwairah's greetings went unanswered because she was burning with anger. Zuwairah became deeply troubled, leading her to find Yusrah in her private room. She sat down close to her, but Yusrah wouldn't even look at her. Trembling, Zuwairah pouted and burst into a soul-wrenching cry. Instantly alarmed, Yusrah rushed to her, holding both of her hands. "Zuzu, are you starting again? What is there to cry about? If it's because I'm angry, it's over, okay? What do you want me to do for you right this second?"
Zuwairah gently pulled her hands away from her elder sister's, wiped her tears with the back of her hand, and said through tears, "When you weren't around, Haidar was the one who stood by me in that town. I am not saying Haidar is blameless—he certainly left a scar on me that will never be erased from my mind until I return to Allah. But never forget: when you remember a person's kindness a thousand times, you should bring up their wrong just once. If that is how it is, forgiveness is what is required, Yaa Yusrah."
Yusrah nodded. Although she would never stay out of Haidar's way, she openly said, "Alright, Zuzu. Since you think this is proper, I will no longer meddle in his affairs. Let's just forget it."
Zuwairah hugged her sister tightly and softly whispered, "Yaa Yusrah, back then Haidar loved me immensely. Now he doesn't love me, yet eight years after parting with Haidar, I still love him. Yaa Yusrah, please find him for me so he can love me."
Yusrah gently stroked her back with a burning heart. She was a woman of the world who had seen yesterday and today; Haidar was not worthy of her younger sister in the slightest, yet she softly uttered, "Zuzu, my love, Insha Allah he will return to you, you'll see. Even he loves you—when he saw me, he thought I was you and said I looked familiar, which means he hasn't forgotten you, right?"
Zuwairah smiled and said, "Really, Yaa Yusrah? If he returns to me, I will be happy and you won't see me crying anymore."
They hugged each other tightly, and neither spoke another word.
They both sat in silence for a while, each lost in thoughts about what had befallen them. Hafizu had been a friend to Ali Haidar since childhood. He wasn't strong and hadn't attained high education like Ali, which was why Ali had pulled him close, made him his chief assistant, and sponsored him through school until he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Education Economics. Later, Ali appointed him manager of his slipper-manufacturing company and his import-export business of garlic and onion to foreign countries, which brought in massive profits. Ali trusted Hafizu's integrity beyond measure, which was why Hafizu knew everything about him.
Ali let out a deep sigh and softly said, "This loss is nothing when we consider how the origin of this wealth came about. Allah was the one who provided it for me at a time I never expected its existence. Now that He has taken back His trust, I will not show ingratitude. Alhamdulillah, both I and everyone around me ate from the table of the Lord who lent it to me. Alhamdulillah, I am immensely grateful that He tested me with something my heart and soul could bear. Health is my capital, and as long as I have it, I will use it to strive for lawful sustenance from now until forever."
Hafizu stared at him for a moment, then shifted his gaze elsewhere and said with deep appreciation, "Indeed, among all the people I have ever associated with, I have never encountered a noble soul like yours, Aliyu Haidar. You have completely surpassed my expectations. I constantly admire your faith, Ali. You are deeply religious, hold fast to your faith, you strive to perform your prayers in congregation on time, and you always walk with a fast on your lips. You have been tested with things that would weaken the faith of others, but your faith only seems to multiply. Wallahi, I haven't slept a wink. What if I were you? Wallahi, I would have enjoyed myself."
Ali flashed an endearing smile and said, "Hafizu, neither you nor I, nor any powerful person, can turn this decree around the way we want; it goes according to Allah's plan. If I deprive my eyes of sleep, I will never be able to make this event undone—that would mean a double loss! Now, let's drop this talk. What is the way forward?"
Hafizu sighed for the umpteenth time and said, "Your Excellency, just now Alhaji Mai Katifa called me regarding that white man who wants garlic, onions, and cloves. But the goods he needs will amount to roughly seven hundred and sixty-four million naira. And you know, because of the rampant deception between them and Nigerians, they don't pay the full amount upfront; he said he will pay 70 percent out of the hundred. I'm sure we don't have the money to buy the required quantity and ship it to him. This is the dilemma—we will suffer a massive loss if he walks away."
With frustration, Ali said, "Give me until tomorrow; I will figure out what to do, Insha Allah."
Hafizu nodded and said, "May Allah help us. But from my end, I have over three hundred million naira. I can give it to you to run, Your Excellency, until you sort out your problems."
Ali nodded, smiling, "You are the primary pillar I would lean on if my legs failed to carry my body, Hafizu. When financial ruin strikes, it destroys wealth completely. Neither you nor I truly own these things; this isn't a minor tribulation coming my way. Therefore, do not mix your wealth with mine. I do not wish for you to remain under my shadow; I want you too to plant a tree that will grow and cast a cool shade under which we can all take shelter."
Hafizu quickly looked at him, "Come on, Ali! What kind of unpleasant talk is that? Do not question Allah's affair like that. A single loss does not mean your downfall!"
Try as he might to hold back, Ali finally shed a tear, his voice trembling as he said, "Hafizu, I just saw a message on my phone before we started this conversation, saying that our warehouse has caught fire and I should rush there. Hafizu, what is the sign of this? When financial ruin strikes, what can I do? Whatever is my portion will escape this fire, but whatever this fire has come to take, it will surely finish the job ordered by the One who issued the final command!"
Hafizu jumped up frantically, "Come on, Ali! Come on, Ali! And you are sitting here while your phone has been ringing and you refused to answer, thinking this was what it was about? Please get up, let's go."
Reluctantly, Ali stood up. Hafizu drove himself because they didn't want to call a driver. When they arrived, the fire was raging as if fueled by petrol, with no water in sight, growing larger and consuming everything inside!
Ali stood like a statue, unable to move. Hafizu cried and ran back and forth, but nothing could be salvaged, and the cause of the fire remained unknown. The goods inside the warehouse were worth well over eight hundred million naira!
When this news reached Ali's wife, Amirah, they all rushed to the scene. The building itself had to be completely rebuilt because of the fire. Nothing was left standing except the empty plot of land, and upon seeing this, her heart grew heavy and she wept as if there were no tomorrow!
Three Days Later
On Sunday, Ali sat with his wife Amirah, having a quiet conversation. He looked at her gently and said, "Ameerah, I wanted us to talk about something."
Ameerah gathered her full attention and turned to him as he began to speak softly.
"Ameerah, you and I both know that gains and losses both come from Allah, and I know you..."

Description
The text is an excerpt from a contemporary Hausa romance and drama novel titled Gini da Yaɓe, written by Billy Galadanchi under the Exquisite Writer's Forum (EWF). It explores themes of trust, betrayal, financial ruin, resilience, faith in destiny, and hidden malice. The narrative contrasts Ali's admirable stoicism and unwavering religious devotion in the face of sudden poverty with the bitter vendettas and manipulations of outside antagonists.
Analytics
- Genre: Contemporary Hausa Fiction / Drama / Romance
- Narrative POV: Third-person omniscient
- Core Themes: Resilience, betrayal in business, religious faith (Tawakkul), marital loyalty, malice, and vengeance
- Character Dynamics:
- Aliyu Haidar: Wealthy, deeply pious, calm, resilient, and generous.
- Hafizu: Loyal friend, employee, and moral support.
- Amirah: Devoted, observant, and supportive wife.
- Yusrah (Zahida) & Zuwairah: Antagonistic figures driven by personal grudges and a desire for destruction.
Comments
The author masterfully employs emotional contrast by setting Ali's inner turmoil against his external composure and radiant smile. The text captures realistic business vulnerabilities—such as blind trust in remote suppliers—while deeply embedding cultural and religious philosophies regarding wealth, fate, and gratitude. The introduction of secondary plots involving vengeance adds suspense and sets the stage for high-stakes emotional conflict in subsequent chapters.
Conclusions
Aliyu Haidar stands as a archetype of patience and faith amidst insurmountable trials. While external forces (Mariri's fraud, the warehouse fire, and Yusrah's vendetta) conspire to strip him of his worldly possessions and peace, his strong spiritual foundation and the steadfast loyalty of his wife and friend provide a sturdy anchor. The story illustrates that true wealth lies not in material abundance, but in character, gratitude, and steadfastness during adversity.
