Description

The story follows Fatima, a struggling woman who is widowed (having lost both her parents and grandparents), living in poverty, and trapped in an unhappy marriage with her husband, Idrisu. Idrisu has abandoned his responsibilities, leaving Fatima to care for their son, Beelal, who lives with a physical disability.
The excerpt captures the daily hardships they face: hunger, poverty, and the emotional pain of seeing Beelal bullied by other children because of his condition and his speech impediment. Despite their suffering, Fatima maintains a sense of dignity, refusing to complain to her husband or others, while hiding her own despair from her son to protect his feelings. Her neighbor, Ummar Hameeda, is a source of support who occasionally provides them with food. The narrative ends with Fatima deciding to travel to Kano to visit her sister, Hajiya Ladifa, as she feels she can no longer bear the isolation and emotional neglect, taking Beelal with her despite the risks of causing tension with her in-laws.

Key Themes

  • Destiny and Resilience: The story centers on the concept of Qaddara (destiny) and how individuals navigate suffering, whether it stems from poverty, orphanhood, or a difficult marriage.
  • The Struggle of Disability: A major focus is on the societal stigma surrounding physical disability, particularly how children (and sometimes teachers) treat Beelal, and the protective, painful role of a mother in shielding her child from that rejection.
  • The Burden of Poverty: The text highlights the stark reality of living without resources, where the lack of basic food like rice or oil becomes a source of extreme distress for the mother.
  • Maternal Sacrifice: Fatima represents the "self-sacrificing mother" archetype—she suppresses her own hunger and sadness to ensure Beelal does not feel like an outcast or an unloved child.

    Important Characters

  • Fatima: The protagonist, a patient and deeply devoted mother.
  • Beelal: Fatima’s young son, who has a physical disability and a speech impediment. He is sensitive and keenly aware of his father’s neglect.
  • Hameeda: A young neighborhood friend of Beelal who shows him genuine kindness and affection, acting as his emotional support.
  • Ummar Hameeda: Fatima’s neighbor who provides food and emotional comfort when the family is at their lowest.
  • Idrisu: Fatima’s husband, characterized by his neglect and abandonment of his family duties.
