Chapter 61 (Excerpt from Lu'u Lu'u by Huguma)

"The very origin of his majesty and a sign."

She took one look at her, but she couldn't help sensing a unique aura surrounding the woman. Tranquility, elegance, and absolute majesty, accompanied by a strange, inexplicable shyness—a type of modesty she had never associated with any human being before.

"Ma sha Allah, Tabarakarrahman," Nanay murmured, unable to hold it in any longer. Even though she could still trace some facial resemblances to Akhnan that she was currently observing... that did not stop her from noticing the stark differences between this beauty and that beauty, differences that became clearer the closer she approached and looked at her.

She extended both of her hands toward Akhnan, looking at her with a profound wave of love washing over her—a love that doubled the affection she felt even before laying eyes on her.

"Bismillahir rahmanir rahim... I welcome you into our midst, I welcome you into the Kingdom of Oromo... and I welcome you into the family of Aba Jifar," she said while holding her hand out to Akhnan.

Akhnan felt she could no longer remain standing before her. For the first time in her life, aside from her Sultan, she sank down onto her knees, beginning to slide toward the floor. This caught Haisam’s attention completely, stirring a blend of awe and wonder within him. However, Nanay quickly caught her hands, saying:

"No... to me, you are a daughter, just like Aanani, Noorah, Rumaisa, Balqees, Hasnaaa, Husssss..."

Nanay's speech cut off mid-list of names as her eyes landed on the bracelet around Akhnan’s wrist.

Everything froze for a moment. Her mind raced backward at top speed through the years—years back to when Safeena had brought this bracelet to her for safekeeping.

"Keep this for me; you are better at keeping secrets than Safiyya. Ahmad gave it to me, and I just have this fear of keeping it inside the house." She had guarded it with utmost importance, until Safeena later retrieved it, telling her she was now certain she could keep it safe.

"W... Where did you get this?" she blurted out, her eyes wide, quickly shaking Akhnan's wrist.

Startled, Akhnan lifted her head with a racing heart, trying to understand what the elderly woman was talking about, only to realize her eyes and attention were entirely fixed on the bracelet.

Quickly, she raised her head to look at Haisam, her heart pounding frantically as a whirlwind of thoughts spun in her mind: Where did he get it to give to her?

"I gave it to her," he said calmly, pulling his gaze away from Akhnan, who was staring at him with a look that had fully deciphered the meaning behind her thoughts.

Still holding Akhnan's hand, Nanay turned a frantic gaze toward Haisam.

"I gave it to her, Nanay. I told her to wear it so you would be truly convinced that she is indeed Safeena's blood."

The words hit Nanay with such immense weight that she staggered as if she were about to fall. Before Haisam could reach her, Akhnan had already used her slender fingers to catch her back firmly. As he stepped closer, he supported her by standing directly behind her.

"You have never played this kind of joke on me," she said, turning her face and eyes back to the bracelet on Akhnan's wrist.

"You don't lie, Muhammad. You have never lied to me... and I know you wouldn't start now, it is not in your nature," she added, releasing Akhnan's hands.

Placing both of her palms on either side of Akhnan's face, she turned her face from left to right, released her, grabbed the edge of the veil draped over her head and twisted it, then released it again to grab Akhnan's hands once more.

She looked at her long fingers, which still bore faint, faded traces of henna, and turned her palms over to examine them closely.

Neither of them expected what happened next: she suddenly pulled Akhnan into a fierce embrace, bursting into a silent, choked sob, though her voice clearly conveyed she was weeping.

"Allahu Akbar... Allahu Akbar, Allahumma lakal hamdu kulluh, wa lakashshukr kulluh... Without a doubt, you are Safeena's blood, you are Safeena's offspring," she finished, her entire body trembling with the depth of an emotion that touched her soul.

Akhnan didn't fully understand anything until Haisam helped Nanay sit down. Aside from the name "Safeena"—her mother—which she recognized, she understood nothing else. She stared intently at Nanay, who was still holding her hand, and then shifted her gaze to Haisam, who was gently massaging Nanay's hand to soothe her heart, his other hand stroking Nanay's shoulder softly, like someone comforting a fussy baby on their back.

THIRTY MINUTES LATER

"Nanay," Akhnan whispered softly, her voice trembling. The word slipped out of her mouth unintentionally. If she recalled correctly, inside Safeena's diary—which she hadn't even opened past the third page yet—among the very first names repeated at the top of the first and second pages was KHADEEJA NANAY. Now, she could remember that much.

"Never call me by any other name except this one," Nanay declared, her hands interlocked with Akhnan's as if someone had told her that letting go would make her vanish and wipe away this chapter of newfound joy and relief.

Akhnan closed her eyes, and a few tears slipped from beneath her closed lids. How many people she called 'Mommy' had she lost in her life? How many people had she walked away from only to mourn their absence? First Ahmad... then Momma had told her there was another boy of hers... and now Nanay? Would she ever find peace if she knew there were at least two of them left?

Nanay reached out to touch the side of Akhnan's face, gently wiping away her tears. As Akhnan slowly opened her eyes at the touch, she felt a profound coolness and mercy in that hand—the very same feeling she experienced with Momma Safiyya.

"You have her eyes... you look at me just like she used to look at me," Nanay said with a smile, tears pooling in her lower eyelids.

Akhnan shifted her gaze to Haisam, who stood with his arms folded across his chest, watching them. He felt as though his heart had been laid bare and sliced open. He detested women's tears, especially those of his Nanay. He had assumed only Nanay's tears would hurt him, but now he felt that exact same pain watching the descent of Akhnan's tears.

"Where is Safeena... God willing, she is with me," Akhnan spoke the words that brought everything to a sudden halt. A wave of longing and profound love for her mother surged within her. She buried her face deeply into her hands, which were still resting in Nanay's, letting the tears flow.

That action softened Nanay completely. With a heavy heart, she placed her hand upon Akhnan's head, feeling her heart beat wildly.

"Ya Allah... Ya Allah," she whispered softly, praying for the strength to bear what she was feeling.

Haisam stepped forward and crouched down on his feet. He slid his hand into the middle of the hands resting in Akhnan's, and then said with utmost softness:

"God took back what belonged to Him years ago, but..."

She quickly waved her hand to stop him.

"What about Safiyya?"

"She is here, she is alive, she is in Agadez in good health."

She let out a deep sigh of relief. Tears threatened to fall again, but summoning all her courage, faith, and belief in God, she suppressed them and said:

"Alhamdulillahi ala kulli haalin... Alhamdulillahi sirran wa jahran, O God, I thank You. When You took Safeena, You gave us her copy... and You left my Safiyya alive. O God, forgive her in Your vast mercy."

Even in her emotional state, responding to the prayer felt mandatory, and her lips moved quietly as she answered.

Nanay pulled Akhnan tightly against her body, feeling all the love she once had for Safeena rising and transferring directly onto Akhnan. She embraced her closely.

"Even with my life, I can give it to Safeena... put it in your mind that your Safeena who died has returned... I am Nanay, and I will be more than a mother to you if such a thing exists. Whatever I knew... you have received everything from Safiyya."

Akhnan closed her eyes slowly, a deep tranquility washing over her as memories of her life with Momma Safiyya flashed before her eyes.

"Why did this happen?" she asked herself. "Why did things turn out this way between her and Momma? Why is it only now that she feels so close to her heart, just like she feels toward Nanay?"

"What is her name... her real name?"

"Khadeeja Nanay... your name has been restored," he said, pronouncing the name with a tone that proved he knew its exact origin. The way he spoke added sweetness and dignity to the name. He closed his eyes and opened them again, gazing at Akhnan, who sat stunned.

"How does he know every detail about her? When did he know she was named Nanay? Is it really the name Nanay? What kind of closeness is this between them?" She longed to hear it... she longed to get the full story.

"Subhanallah... Subhanallah," Nanay kept repeating, remembering the magnitude of the love binding them together.

"Nanay... did you forget about us?" Noorah's voice interrupted them, spoken in a spoiled, playful tone as Aanani pushed her forward. She didn't enter the parlor; she spoke from behind the door.

The tone of her speech made Haisam and Nanay chuckle. Akhnan didn't say anything because Noorah was speaking in the Oromo language, and she didn't understand what she said, aside from the high-pitched voice indicating a young child was speaking.

"We will finish our conversation later, Nanay," Haisam said, standing up slowly and stepping back.

"Indeed... my namesake needs to know who her mother is... come, help your wife up," Nanay said, pulling her hand away from Akhnan's, though she still couldn't stop looking at her with a radiant smile of love and affection. Seeing that Akhnan refused to move, she began walking toward the door, all signs of shyness clearly written across Akhnan's face.

He fixed his gaze entirely on her after Nanay left, slowly stepping closer to her. He truly felt an intense wave of pity and sympathy welling up inside his heart—the kind of sympathy he had never felt for anyone else. He noticed a heavy weight of Nanay lingering in her eyes, though he didn't know what caused it.

He didn't bother offering his hand or telling her to get up. Instead, he simply reached out with both hands and lifted her. Because he lifted her unawares, it shattered all her defenses, causing her to fall effortlessly into his arms.

That broad chest and its scent had become a trial for her—only the second scent in the entire world that she recognized as pulling her out of her numb reality, alongside the scent of his natural perfume combined with her native Shuwa incense and more.

She raised her hand intending to push him away, but the strength of his hold kept her securely against him. His shoulders didn't even budge, let alone allow her to hope he would break the closeness between them.

She hated this gaze—this direct, unblinking look into her eyes that kept eroding her defenses, making her feel strange, and driving her internal senses wild.

He stared deeply into her eyes, where the tears wetting her eyelashes made them look even longer and more defined. He gently extended his finger and touched her eyelashes. She drew in a sharp breath and closed her eyes. That only made her look even more breathtaking in his eyes, the tears forming a veil across her pupils.

Using three fingers, he gently wiped away her tears while continuing to study her face. Everything about her was in perfect order... everything looked as though it had been custom-chosen... everything matched her nature and form. Her perfect eyebrows matched her long, high-bridged nose... her small mouth with its thin, delicate lips...

Every time his fingers brushed against her face, she felt something rippling through her body, like the crawling of ants across her skin. Deep down, she began to rethink everything about him; by now, his presence was starting to frighten her... his actions surpassed anything she could have anticipated.

"When? How? How does he know everything concerning her? Everything about her, even ancient history that didn't just involve her alone, but directly involved her mother?"

"Who are you?" she asked again, her eyes closed, but this time in a broken voice—a voice that betrayed an intense, desperate need to know who he was.

He remained silent, staring at her lips. Her words didn't bother him; it was her lips that captivated him so much that his body began to react. His lower abdomen tightened in a way that confirmed his mood was on the verge of shifting. He felt like grabbing those lips and sucking on their smoothness, the mere thought of which could shatter his composure.

"You're starting to scare me," she said, opening her blue eyes to look at him.

A sudden shiver ran down his spine. The way she opened her eyes with that expression made it impossible for him to resist. He pulled her flush against his body as she attempted to slide away, pressing her firmly to himself while placing both palms flat against her hips.

Her curves filled his palms. He closed his eyes, swallowing hard. The placement of his hands made her jump in alarm. She tried once more to wriggle out of his grip, but she utterly lacked the strength, so she simply shifted her eyes back to him.

"Please," she pleaded in a melting voice, assuming it would help make him let go. But it only fueled him further, as he rested his head directly on her shoulder, she could feel how hard he was struggling to regulate his breathing.

"Please," he repeated her exact word, brokenly, because of how fiercely his heart was pounding.

"I am finished," she thought to herself in despair, tears gathering in her eyes again. Why? Why does he insist on pressing himself against me like this?

"Obbooooooo!" Noorah's voice filled his ears, still calling from behind the closed door without entering.

"Ya salam," he muttered, drawing back from her body.

"Noorah," he answered in a raspy, disrupted voice.

"We are waiting, obbo please," she called out in Oromo.

"Alright," he replied lazily.

Calmly, he unraveled his hands from where they rested, stepped back slowly, and pulled out a tissue, offering it to her.

"Wipe the tears from your face. For now, I know no way out except through God."

She reached out, took the tissue, and locked her eyes with his. Seeing the lingering questions floating in her gaze, he took two steps back and added:

"Your mommy is one of the most beloved people in Nanay's heart... we grew up knowing her amidst longing, love, and affection. How could she ever let anything harm the offspring of that creation?"

She pressed the tissue to her face, gently wiping away the remaining tears. She felt a wave of love and affection for the older woman washing over her, feeling almost as if the mother she had lost had returned, just as she had desired to feel.

"To be sure, what is the difference... what differentiates this feeling from how she feels toward Momma Safiyya? What stopped her from feeling this way sooner toward Momma Safiyya?"

"My mommy... closeness with my mommy," her mind answered instantly. The thought froze in her head as Haisam took her hand into his own, saying:

"Let's go."

She glanced at him briefly. Their eyes met, and she looked away. She realized he was beginning to normalize certain behaviors regarding her—like holding her hand, trying to make it an everyday routine.

She raised her head in a turmoil of emotions just as Nanay stepped out. She had expected to see only the three of them—Nanay, him, and his wife. But seeing Nanay alone made her fixate her eyes on her. Instead of the flurry of questions Noorah and the others were bombarding her with...

Nanay smiled at them, walking over to sit between them.

"Haisam didn't just bring me a daughter-in-law... he brought me my ancient dream... my old desire, gathered all together and brought to me. Haisam went into the world and found my daughter for me... I won't tell you who she is; let's see who can guess what I mean after she steps forward," she said with a smile.

Murmurs broke out among them as everyone tried to guess, everyone wanting to voice their thoughts. But as for Saamee (Safiyya), she sank into a renewed state of panic.

Whose daughter is this to Nanay besides the ones standing before her? Whose daughter is this that brought such a radiant shade of joy to Nanay the moment she walked in—joy she hadn't seen in her for a very long time?

Amidst their noisy chatter, her mind grew heavy—a weight she didn't fully comprehend until her eyes landed on Haisam's white foot stepping forward, encased in a soft black leather shoe.

Dizzily, she shifted her gaze slightly forward, landing on Akhnan's feet, which featured slender toes with faint traces of henna remaining on the tips of each nail.

With deliberate composure and a pounding heart, she forced her eyes upward to reach Akhnan's face, a face she was desperately anxious to see. Who is she? What will she prove? In what way is she superior?

Just as her eyes reached Akhnan's face, Akhnan raised her head slowly, searching for Noorah. She remembered the young girl's voice calling them twice earlier, and hearing that voice close by prompted her to look up.

A piece of her heart felt sliced right out of her chest, seeking a way to drop away. A wave of shock, fear, and absolute terror washed over her soul, heart, physical body, and very core.

"Ya Allahu... Ya Allahu," she whispered deep within her mind, her mouth trembling just like her hands and feet.

She walked slowly, her eyes still cast slightly downward, holding Noorah's hand tightly within her slender fingers.

She had expected her to be a woman like any other woman, but instead, she saw a goddess—a woman who only shared the name of 'woman' with others, while everything else about her was entirely different. Everything about her embodied the true meaning of the word BEAUTY—her posture, her entire build radiating the true essence of MAJESTY and ELEGANCE. She hadn't even sat with her for three full minutes, but right from where she stood, she could sense massive weights surrounding her. Her eyes landed on those blue eyes—a unique shade of blue she had never seen before. It was a face blessed with a gentle beauty that even she knew was gorgeous. No matter how she felt at that moment, she couldn't deny it; in fact, it was one of the most unsettling and disorienting things about her right now.

She walked with majestic, natural grace. She looked at those blue eyes again—not the kind she knew, not the kind she was used to seeing. This shade of blue possessed a unique, captivating beauty and a mesmerizing light.

"How could he possibly avert his eyes from this creature?" a voice whispered softly inside her heart. She closed her eyes, feeling resentful toward the truth her heart had just told her, feeling her heartbeat multiplying into a mad, raging jealousy.

"She is better than me... she surpasses me in every way, I admit it... but I have more closeness to him, I have more closeness to Nanay, I have more closeness to knowing everything he loves. Therefore, I have my own qualities, I have other qualities with which I will win him over," she told herself frantically, snapping her eyes wide open to look at them.

This time, her eyes landed on Akhnan's other hand, which was intertwined with Haisam's. His fingers were locked tightly with hers, as if he feared she might slip away. For the very first time... the first time in her life, she saw his hand intertwined with another woman's. Those long, slender fingers of his that she had admired for so long—those fingers she would spend ages watching, especially when he wrote with that captivating style that drew her attention. A burning sensation squeezed her heart tightly.

"Come here, my daughter." Nanay's words forced everyone back to reality.

Summary of the Text

In this chapter excerpt from Huguma's Hausa romance novel Lu'u Lu'u, a deeply emotional family reunion unfolds. Haisam brings Akhnan to meet Nanay at the palace of Oromo. When Nanay sees an antique bracelet on Akhnan's wrist, time freezes as she recognizes it as an item once entrusted to her by Safeena (Akhnan's mother/Haisam's connection). Overcome with emotion and tears, Nanay realizes Akhnan is truly Safeena's flesh and blood, embracing her as her own daughter and formally restoring her name to Khadeeja Nanay.

Later, Haisam and Akhnan share an intimate, emotionally charged moment where Haisam comforts her, his physical closeness creating a confusing whirlwind of attraction and vulnerability for Akhnan. Meanwhile, Saamee (Safiyya), watching from a distance, is struck by a mixture of shock, terror, and consuming jealousy upon witnessing Akhnan's breathtaking, majestic beauty, realizing the formidable rival she faces for Haisam's heart.

Analytics & Narrative Insights

  • Pacing and Emotional Shifts: The text utilizes a dual-layer pacing mechanism. The first half is heavily emotional, driven by nostalgia, familial relief, and tearful recognition (the bracelet reveal). The second half shifts into a high-tension psychological space, focusing on tactile intimacy (Haisam and Akhnan) and external surveillance (Saamee's perspective).
  • Symbolism of the Bracelet: The heirloom bracelet serves as a narrative catalyst. It bridges generational gaps, authenticates identity, and instantly disarms skepticism, proving that physical or material tokens hold immense legal and emotional weight within the world-building of this Hausa romance.
  • Character Dynamics (Foil Setup): The author intentionally sets up a contrast between Akhnan and Saamee. Akhnan represents natural, effortless majesty ("tafisuy" / goddess-like grace), whereas Saamee represents acquired proximity and familiarity. This dynamic heightens the narrative conflict, transforming a family reunion into a brewing romantic and psychological battleground.
