English Translation

Now, as always, she was under the shade of the dalbejiya tree, which had become like her room whenever she did not have lectures.

One glance at her was enough to realize she was lost in a world of thought. Quickly, she raised her head, looking around in all directions. She took a deep breath, and with a soft, trembling voice, she said, "My nose, stop telling me lies! Stop choking me with things that are not true! Ever since I was born, I only smelled that fragrance once around a single person, and since I moved far away, I haven’t smelled it again. I never gave him the opportunity to smell it again, because he turned out to be a wicked tyrant, a betrayer, a deceiver!!!" She said this as tears streamed down her face.

"By God, I hate you, Isma'il! You mere cheat!" She burst into a heartbreaking cry.

"Haba, Iman! Do you think life should always be spent like this in tears and brooding?" Miss Xoxo's voice interrupted Iman's rambling. "Iman, we are your friends, people who love you with a love like that of biological sisters. From the very day we first set eyes on you in this school, we found ourselves loving you. For God's sake, if not for us, at least tell us your trouble so you might find some relief. If we have any help to offer you, we will help you, even if it's just through prayers."

"That's true, Miss Xoxo. It's high time Iman shared her troubles with us, if indeed she trusts us as much as we trust her. It's been almost two years and a few months that we've been together, and we have never kept any secrets from you. Whatever bothers us, we share with one another. You are the only one among us who keeps your secrets hidden from us. We don't know the reason for that, or perhaps we aren't worthy of knowing your troubles, who knows? But you know that your sorrow is ours, and your happiness is ours. By God, I feel deep inside me as though we were born of the same mother and father."

"You are absolutely right," Reefat Xoxo said as she adjusted her sitting position. She grabbed Iman's hands and squeezed them tightly. "Iman, if you truly regard us as sisters or true friends, then tell us your problem. Even if it's just prayers, we will support you. We are tired of seeing you like this, Iman. Two years is not two days. But if you won't tell us, we won't pressure you; we will just continue to help you with prayers, if God wills."

Reefat stood up. "Come on, let's go, Xoxo," she said, taking Reefat by the hand.

Iman burst into tears. "For God's sake, Xoxo, don't leave! Please, bear with me and listen."

"How are we supposed to listen to you, Iman? Every time you talk like this, yet you fail to tell us anything. Do you think we are going to keep pressuring you until you finally tell us? Why would we pressure you about something you have no desire to share?"

"I know, I accept my fault, but please come back. Don't be angry with me. By God, I love you too, and I regard you both as my true blood sisters."

Dear Xoxo had a soft heart, so she pulled Reefat's hand and they came back to sit down, sandwiching Iman in the middle. Reefat said, "Iman, we are waiting for you. Please tell us your trouble, okay? Maybe we can help you with something."

Iman raised her hands to wipe away her tears, sniffing back her nose. She gazed at her friends and said, "Miss Xoxo, Reefat, please forgive me. I never kept anything concerning my life away from you because of a lack of trust. No! Rather, I viewed what happened to me as my own private secret since it happened to me years ago before I even met you. Besides, I felt that what happened was already in the past. But I am asking for your forgiveness. God willing, this time I will tell you who SAUDAT is! Just please bear with me until the weekend when we are free so we can talk about it calmly. I will tell you the root of the destruction of my life and the foundation upon which my sorrow was built..." She broke out into a heart-wrenching, soul-shaking sob.

Seeing this, Reefat and Xoxo joined in and started crying too. They cried until they had enough of it, neither of them comforting the other. When they were finally exhausted, they grew quiet.

They stood up and headed to class, their hearts heavy and troubled. Iman kept glancing around anxiously, feeling as though the scent of that perfume was trailing after them.

Xoxo asked, "Iman, what on earth are you looking for? Most of the time I see you looking over your shoulder. Why?"

Iman gave a bitter smile. "All of that is part of the history of my life, Xoxo. Don't worry, in due time you will find out what makes me look over my shoulder so often."

From there they entered the classroom, and shortly after, the teacher walked in and they began their lesson... ✍🏻

So, dear readers, what is this book about? What is the trouble of their friend Miss Xoxo? You and I are both asking the same question, because I don't know anything about it either. We will just have to follow this story slowly until we get the answers to the questions filling our hearts.

Yours truly, Bilyn Abdul. See you later! 👌🏻

Summary

The story opens with Iman sitting under a dalbejiya tree on campus, lost in a painful memory. Overcome by grief, she mutters tearfully about an unfaithful and cruel man named Isma'il who haunts her thoughts with a distinct fragrance. Her close friends, Miss Xoxo and Reefat, find her distressed and confront her lovingly. They express frustration that after more than two years of close friendship, Iman still keeps her personal life completely hidden from them while they share everything.

Initially attempting to walk away out of exasperation, they are moved by Iman's tearful plea not to leave her. Moved by compassion, they return and sit with her. Iman finally yields, asking for their forgiveness and promising to reveal her true identity as Saudat, along with the tragic foundation of her sorrows, during the upcoming weekend when they have free time.

The narrative then shifts back to establish the strong, sisterly bond between Iman, Miss Xoxo (from Kano, schooling in Zaria), and Reefat (from Yola, Adamawa). Afterward, Iman shares a phone call with her younger brother, Musayyeef, and her aunt, leaving her visibly saddened afterward. Reluctantly stepping into the past, Iman begins narrating her true identity: her full name is Saudat Suleiman Umar, originating from Katsina, though her family relocated to Kano for work. She details her family—her older sister Aunty Salma and younger brother Shamsuddeen (Deeni)—and recounts how a fateful visit to stay with Aunty Salma and her husband, Ya Majeed, during the holidays completely upended her life. During that visit, a severe abdominal pain landed her in the hospital, where she was examined by a young doctor named Dr. Isma'il, setting off a chain of events that intertwined her destiny with his.
