    Heartache and Dreams in Kazaure

He knew deep down that he had only spoken those harsh words to cause a stir in her heart, but he also recognized that it was her sheer lack of experience and a heavy sense of shyness that had paralyzed her from answering the phone in the first place.
When she finally gathered the courage to switch the phone back on, she hurriedly dialed his number. She called once, twice, and kept redialing consecutively, but he deliberately ignored her, flatly refusing to pick up. Rayhanah's resistance crumbled, and she burst into tears. Fortunately for her, she was completely alone in the room at that moment.
With tears streaming down her face and splashing onto the phone screen, her trembling fingers typed a quick text message and sent it to him:

"Please forgive me, Yaya Khalipha. It wasn't meant that way... I just truly didn't know what to say to you."

Even then, an absolute, dead silence followed; he stubbornly refused to reply. In utter defeat, she shut down the device entirely, wiping the tears from her eyes with the corner of her prayer hijab.
Rayhanah eventually fell into a restless, exhausting sleep, plagued by a chaotic jumble of vivid dreams. Yet, to her profound confusion, not a single one of those dreams featured Khalipha—instead, they were entirely consumed by IBRAHEEM!
This bizarre phenomenon began to genuinely terrify Rayhanah. The man she actively loved, and who loved her in return, was one person; yet the man constantly occupying her dreamscape was someone else entirely.
Oh Allah! What is this inexplicable connection I have with Ibraheem? she questioned herself frantically. I completely forgot about him for eight long years! I haven't spent a single second thinking about him or anything related to his existence. So why is he appearing now, the exact moment Khalipha and his love have taken center stage in my life?
The following afternoon was Friday. Following the conclusion of the congregational Juma'at prayer, she remained seated inside the mosque, quietly engaging in her Azkar (supplications). As she moved through her prayers, she continuously wiped away silent tears of distress. She made a solemn vow to herself never to switch her phone back on, bitterly blaming herself for making Yaya Khalipha angry.
Tomorrow was Saturday, the final weekend of the month, which meant Baba Doctor would be coming to pick her up. Today officially marked her first full month at Informatics Kazaure.
Zaituna, one of her classmates, stepped into the mosque, her eyes scanning the rows of worshippers. She eventually spotted Rayhanah huddled in a far corner, deeply wrapped inside her large white prayer hijab, either reciting her counting beads or quietly studying by herself.
Zaituna hurried over to her and whispered quickly, "People have been searching for you everywhere outside for a while now. Your brother has arrived to take you home."
Stunned, Rayhanah thought to herself, My brother? Which brother of mine? Nevertheless, she stood up and quietly followed Zaituna out.
From a distance, her eyes caught sight of a sleek, stunning metallic-bronze Cadillac SRX parked in the lot. The vehicle's windows were heavily tinted, making it impossible to discern who was sitting inside. Hesitant, she drew back and stood to the side while Zaituna continued walking back toward the female hostels.
Crossing her arms tightly over her chest, Rayhanah stood there scowling, fully prepared for a confrontation. She bitterly assumed the car belonged to one of the spoiled, wealthy elite boys who frequented the Informatics campus solely to pick up young female students for joyrides.
She let out a sharp, irritated hiss and turned on her heel to walk away, but at that exact moment, the driver-side window rolled down completely, and a voice called out:
    "Rayhanah!"
She spun around instantly. It was Yaya Khalipha.

    An Emotional Encounter

He stepped out of the vehicle and walked deliberately toward where she stood. He was dressed neatly in a crisp white Filtex brocade kaftan trousers and inner shirt, while his flowing grand robe (babban riga) and a rich brown cap lay inside the car.
For the very first time in her life, Rayhanah allowed herself to truly look at Yaya Khalipha—staring directly, deeply into his eyes. She realized then that he was an exceptionally handsome man. His physical resemblance to Mami was absolute and undeniable; he didn't possess a single physical trace of Baba Doctor. His skin was incredibly fair, mirroring Mami's complexion perfectly without a drop of Baba Doctor's dark skin tone.
In fact, his features were so striking that he barely looked completely Nigerian, bearing a closer resemblance to people of Middle Eastern descent. Judging him against her own simple appearance, a flood of insecure questions rushed through her mind: What on earth did an elite, attractive man like Khalipha see in a girl like me to choose me as his future first wife and the mother of his children?
She knew she wasn't a conventional beauty, she wasn't from an influential lineage, and she possessed absolutely nothing of material value to capture the attention of a man of his stature. No one could answer that burning question except Khalipha himself.
Yet, turning the question inward, she acknowledged that despite her insecurities, she loved him deeply—and her affection had nothing to do with his physical appearance. She loved Khalipha purely for his exceptional character, his unwavering integrity, and the profound way he had consistently respected and honored her even when she was physically crippled and vulnerable. To Khalipha, her humble, impoverished background was never a metric of devaluation. For him, the guiding principle was clear:

(Verily, the most honorable of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous.)
With eyes completely mirrors of these unspoken thoughts, Rayhanah looked up into Khalipha’s gaze.
If loving Yaya Khalipha makes me a hypocrite, just as Abida claimed, then I am completely willing to be crowned the queen of hypocrites, Rayhanah thought fiercely to herself.
Yet, she was utterly lost on how to navigate his lingering anger, and she couldn't find the words to beg him to stop giving her the cold shoulder. If she had the emotional courage, she would have bared her soul right then and told him that her heart was far too weak to endure his disapproval.
Unable to contain the swelling emotion, tears spilled over her eyelids. She quickly turned her back to him, trying to hide her face as she wiped them away with the edge of her hijab.
Without a word, Khalipha gently took her hand, leading her across the lot and placing her into the passenger seat of his car. He leaned forward, resting his forehead against the steering wheel as he closed his eyes tightly. He remained in that silent position for a long time before finally opening them, only to find that she was still silently weeping, continuously brushing away her tears.
Khalipha didn't offer immediate pity, even though he accurately read the exact cause of her emotional distress and understood every rhythmic beat of her heart regarding him. Instead, he spoke softly:

"I am incredibly sorry for this uninvited visit, Rayhanah. I simply couldn't endure being away any longer. I didn't drive all this way to make you cry, please forgive me. By Allah, I will never show up unannounced like this again without your express permission. Now, go ahead and return to your hostel, since my presence has only caused you tears..."

Suppressing her sobs with immense effort, she turned to him, her voice trembling violently: "Yaya Khalipha, you are completely misjudging me. You are passing judgment on me based on assumptions that do not exist in my heart."
He turned to her sharply, his eyes locking onto hers. "Then tell me, what exactly is inside that heart of yours?"
She lowered her gaze instantly, her tears threatening to spill over once more as she whispered, "It is the exact opposite of what you assume..."
A profound wave of tenderness swept through Khalipha. A warm, relieved smile broke across his face as he asked softly, "Is it truly the opposite?"
She nodded her head gently, keeping her face averted to avoid his direct gaze.
Seeing her modesty, Khalipha took the edge of his fine grand robe and gently, meticulously wiped the tears from her cheeks, murmuring, "Have you truly accepted me to be the father of your future children, Rayhanah? Without it feeling like an act of charity, a debt of gratitude, or something forced upon your soul?"
This time, she gave a distinct, firm nod of affirmation. An internal voice screamed at her: Open your mouth and tell him! Tell him that you didn't just start loving him today! However, her deep-seated female modesty and self-respect firmly suppressed the urge, keeping her silent.
Khalipha leaned in closer, trying to catch a glimpse of her face as she sniffled loudly. Despite his persistent efforts to get her to look him dead in the eye, she stubbornly refused, clamping her eyes shut tightly.
Amused and deeply charmed, he nudged her gently. "Rahane... come on, my Rahane. Look at me."
An involuntary, beautiful laugh escaped her lips despite the tears still shimmering in her eyes. She retorted playfully, "If I call you Audu in return, then we are even."
Khalipha gasped in mock shock, a hand flying to his mouth. "Where on earth did you uncover my real birth name, Rahane?"
She turned her back to him teasingly and replied, "From the eyes of the inquisitive."
Khalipha was completely undone, utterly powerless against the intoxicating effect of Rayhanah’s sudden, playful wit. He slowly removed his embroidered cap and placed it gently onto her lap.
"So, you actually have a voice and a sharp tongue, Rayhanah?"
She pouted her slender lips, keeping her face turned away as she countered, "Touch them and find out for yourself."
He laughed, highly amused. "Are you asking me to touch lips stained with indigo dye?"
Rayhanah broke into a radiant smile, revealing a row of flashing, perfectly healthy white teeth. "Even if you search inside a merchant’s medicine bag, you will feel the truth of it if you touch them."
"Shake my hand, Rayhah..." Khalipha pleaded, his voice thick with strained emotion as he extended his right hand, which bore a sleek brown Swatch wristwatch.
Instead of taking his hand, she quickly grabbed the door handle and pulled it open, speaking hurriedly: "The call to prayer has already been sounded, Yaya K... may I go now?"
Khalipha slowly ran his hand through his thick hair, tracing it from his forehead all the way down to the nape of his neck. His eyes closed halfway, the intense emotion turning his eyes a deep, stormy shade of brown. He breathed out a ragged, exhausted sigh:
"Go to the masjid, Rayhah... quickly! Before you end up completely taking my life while I am still breathing!"

    2. The Blossoming of Love and Mami's Schemes

    A Deepening Bond

This brief, charged encounter served as the definitive key that unlocked the floodgates of love between Rayhah and Khalipha. Her profound modesty, her quiet demeanor, her absolute humility, and her unshakable devotion to her faith were the core virtues that dragged Khalipha entirely into the deep well of love, submerging him up to his neck.
She completely exceeded every single expectation and ideal quality he had ever fantasized about finding in a lifelong partner.
The following morning, Baba Doctor arrived at the campus to pick her up and drove her back to Kano. He allowed her to spend a couple of days at the family estate before personally driving her back on Tuesday, as his demanding schedule on Monday hadn't permitted him a free moment. Under no circumstances would he allow her to travel via public commercial vehicles.
However, the treatment Rayhanah received from Mami during those short two days left her deeply shaken and terrified. Mami had completely transformed, shifting her colors like a calculated chameleon. She made it glaringly, painfully obvious that she detested Rayhanah's presence in her home.
This was despite the fact that Baba Doctor hadn't yet officially informed his wife that Khalipha intended to marry the girl; he had merely stated that he was arranging a marriage for Rayhanah and that she would not be enrolling at Bayero University Kano (B.U.K.).
Mami had demanded to know the identity of the intended groom, to which Baba Doctor had simply replied, "Time will tell you."
Mami had watched him walk away, thinking bitterly to herself, Yes, and time will also reveal to you exactly who Anita Shiyana is, since you seem to think you only have Asma'u to deal with.
Mami realized with bitter clarity that Dr. Halima had been entirely right—she had been far too complacent with Dr. Mansur. She had foolishly believed his professions of love, firmly vowing that she would never stoop to consulting spiritualists or native doctors over her husband. But now, she accepted that her negligence had cost her dearly. Her husband had begun to play a hypocritical game with her, actively concealing major family matters because he knew she would never approve of them.
In truth, Dr. Mansur’s heart was entirely pure. He wasn't hiding the arrangement out of malice or hypocrisy; he simply wished to avoid unnecessary marital strife and explosive arguments until the foundational elements of the marriage were completely locked in stone. Only then did he plan to sit her down, explain the situation thoroughly, and beg her forgiveness for breaking his previous promise, chalking it up to the inherent flaws and limitations of human nature.
He hadn't engineered this situation; he hadn't forced the two young people together. They had fallen in love entirely on their own. As a devout man, he was merely choosing to follow the divine commandments of Allah and the established Sunnah of the Prophet, which dictates that if your children express a clear, righteous desire to marry, you must facilitate it under the guidance of the Almighty.
Beyond that, Dr. Mansur had never in his wildest dreams imagined that an elite son like Khalipha would ever fall for Rayhanah. He had possessed his own distinct, grand plans for Rayhanah’s future—but the moment Khalipha voiced his love for her, the doctor selflessly crushed his own internal ambitions and wholeheartedly embraced the destiny Allah had brought to light.
As the weeks rolled by, Khalipha became a constant fixture in her life, traveling relentlessly between Abuja, Kano, and Kazaure. An incredibly powerful attachment and deep mutual understanding blossomed between him and Rayhanah.
Even though he was always the one actively vocalizing his love—as her profound shyness made her words rare and precious gems to him—he discovered the perfect trick to make her speak. Whenever he wanted to see her beautiful smile, he would simply call her "Rahane" or teasingly address her as "the wife of Audu." Invariably, her reservations would melt, and she would flash her beautiful, flawless row of thirty-two teeth.
Their bond extended far beyond conventional romance; it evolved into an unshakable mutual trust, a profound heart-to-heart closeness, and a deep alliance that transcended basic love.
In fact, not even Baba Doctor understood Rayhanah with the absolute, meticulous depth that Khalipha did. He knew the absolute core of her soul; he knew her deepest desires, her hidden fears, and everything she detested. She was a girl who cared nothing for excessive vanity or heavy makeup; she was naturally smart, exceptionally sharp, and beautifully simple. He loved Rayhanah with an intensity that defied description, harboring an affection whose true depth he couldn't even quantify.

    Triumph and Turmoil

Time moved with terrifying speed, spinning forward like a child's toy wheel. Before they knew it, eight full months had dissolved into history. Rayhanah successfully graduated, clutching an International Diploma in Cyber Security. Furthermore, due to her stellar academic performance as the overall best graduating student, she secured an automatic direct admission to pursue her full Bachelor's degree at their primary international campus in Singapore.
The sheer, unadulterated joy that erupted in Baba Doctor's heart was beyond words. He immediately dialed Khalipha to break the spectacular news, having already informed Mami before they even crossed the city limits from Kazaure back into Kano.
Mami, however, sat frozen on the edge of her mattress for hours, completely consumed by disbelief and jealousy. She knew countless daughters of her elite wealthy friends who had been stuck at Informatics for over three years, utterly unable to pass their courses, resulting in thousands of nairas wasted before they eventually dropped out in shame.
Mami realized with absolute certainty that if she didn't find a way to permanently sever this girl from her household immediately, her own positioning and authority would be completely ruined.
She immediately phoned Dr. Halima to map out their strategy. Halima reassured her coldly, "By Allah, do not distress yourself. This entire matter is coming to an absolute end. Just make sure you are ready tomorrow so we can travel to Plateau (Jos)." Jos was Mami’s ancestral home, the root where everything was prepared; they were making the journey solely to collect the finished spiritual works.
Because of this secret plot, when the family arrived, Mami didn't exhibit a single negative reaction toward Rayhanah’s academic triumph.
However, far away in Abuja, Khalipha was plunged into a state of severe anxiety. He was terrified that Daddy would readily agree to dispatch Rayhanah to Singapore for her degree without solidifying their marriage first.
Unable to focus, he abandoned his desk on Friday, leaving all his corporate duties behind in Abuja to race down to Kano. To his immense frustration, when he arrived, he discovered that Daddy was out of the country. Dr. Mansur had traveled to Ireland to attend a prestigious international seminar focused on Otosclerosis, serving as a primary consultant due to his groundbreaking surgical successes in the Braemar region.
Khalipha walked through the grand house and called out a greeting at the entrance of Mami’s bedroom. She didn't hear him; she was deeply engrossed in a phone conversation, her back turned completely to the doorway.
He couldn't fully comprehend the exact context of her conversation, but a sudden, icy chill swept through his entire body when he distinctly heard Mami bark into the receiver:

"Even if it means I have to march through the public streets completely naked, exactly as the day my mother gave birth to me, I swear by everything I hold dear that Khalipha will NEVER marry that wretched girl!"

She slammed the phone down, her chest heaving with rage, and it was only then that she noticed his presence in the room. Her fury was too massive to contain or mask. She leveled a cold, venomous glare at her son, refusing to offer a single word of greeting.

    The Ultimatum from Mami

Dejected and physically trembling, Khalipha slowly sank onto a seat near her, the strength completely draining from his knees. Though he didn't know the exact identity of the girl she was speaking about—since Allah had spared his ears from hearing a specific name—he was deeply unnerved.
Throughout his entire life, he knew his mother to be a woman devoid of real enemies or malicious intent. Who on earth could have driven her to make such a horrific, desperate vow?
Mami snapped her bloodshot eyes toward him, her gaze burning with an intense heat. In a raspy, booming voice, she barked:
    "ABDALLAH!"
Khalipha flinched violently. In his thirty-plus years of life, his mother had never once, even by slip of the tongue, addressed him by his official legal birth name—except for the infamous day she had stormed his private residence in Abuja after catching him in a massive transgression. Panic gripped his throat, paralyzing him from answering.
She pressed on, her voice dripping with venom, "Don't play dumb with me. Everything you and your father have been plotting behind my back is fully known to me. I am an educated woman, not an illiterate fool. But I want to hear the absolute truth directly from your own mouth, for Allah forbids passing judgment based on mere suspicion."
He nodded his head slowly, signaling that he was listening, waiting for the blade to drop. Then, she fired the question that shattered his world:
"Who is the girl you are so desperately trying to marry?"
Without an ounce of hesitation, he looked her dead in the eye and answered firmly, "Rayhanah!"
She sneered, "And who is the groom that the Doctor is trying to force upon her?"
Khalipha silently tapped his own chest, signaling clearly: It is me.
Mami shook her head, a cold, ruthless smile touching her lips. "Then let me make this beautifully clear to you: I completely withhold my blessing! Your father clearly hid the sacred vow we made to each other before I ever allowed that girl to cross my threshold. And you, from the very beginning, chose to play a hypocritical game with me. I personally traveled all the way to Abuja out of pure maternal concern for your well-being, yet you chose to blindside me and treat my intelligence with absolute contempt.
What on earth do you see in that pathetic girl, Khalipha? Are you that desperate to drag our family’s pristine reputation and dignity through the absolute mud? A girl of completely unknown, low-class origin, a survivor of a repulsive disease, with absolutely no lineage or family to speak of! They claim her mother and father were from Takai and that they are all dead. Did they simply drop from the sky? Do they have no living relatives to claim them?" She demanded, her eyes wide with rage.
Despite the powerful air conditioning units humming in the room, threatening to freeze the air, thick sheets of sweat poured from Khalipha’s forehead down to his toes. He remained completely mute throughout her entire tirade, unable to formulate a single syllable.
She thrust a furious finger directly into his face, delivering her final, devastating ultimatum:

"If you desire to maintain peace with me as your mother, you will drop this disgusting matter immediately! You will walk up to your father and tell him you want to marry Radhiyyah. I am the woman who conceived you, carried you inside my womb for nine excruciating months through sheer physical agony, and brought you into this world!
That low-born girl is not worthy of mixing her blood with mine. That is my final word. Go back to your father and tell him you have changed your mind and wish to marry Radhiyyah instead. If you refuse, do not dare blame me for the absolute devastation that will follow.
I am granting you exactly two days to unravel this pathetic little knot you and your father have tied. If you fail to do so, by Allah, you will face a shock you never anticipated. I am fully prepared to face the absolute worst of the Doctor's wrath. I am ready for him. You may leave my sight now. We are done."

    Despair and Isolation

Utterly shattered and disoriented, Khalipha didn't spend another five minutes inside the Kano estate. He sprinted out, jumped into his car, and tore down the highway back toward Abuja.
It was only through sheer masculine willpower, an ironclad faith, and the protective covering of his daily prayers that Khalipha managed to arrive in Abuja safely; his mind was completely detached from the mechanics of driving.
The mere suggestion of abandoning Rayha felt like a physical blade twisting inside his ears. He would have gladly volunteered to be stabbed with a hundred medical needles over enduring Mami's horrific demand—to look Baba Doctor in the eye and say he was abandoning Rayhanah. How? On what grounds? With what face or voice could he possibly utter such a betrayal?
Yet, a dark, terrifying corner of his mind kept whispering the brutal truth: This is an explicit command from your BIOLOGICAL MOTHER. It was an authority he possessed absolutely no right to defy or disrespect under Islamic law.
Confronted by this paradox, Khalipha was dragged into a black abyss of psychological torture, the likes of which he had never experienced in his entire life. Up until this moment, Mami and Daddy had always granted their children whatever they desired, shielding them from life's true cruelties. They had never known the agony of desperate, unfulfilled longing—let alone a love as all-consuming as the one he harbored for Rayhanah. He possessed an absolute conviction that his very heart had been engineered to beat solely for her existence.
He couldn't even pinpoint exactly where his love for Rayhanah resided within his chest; it had completely saturated his entire being. To cut her out would require completely ripping his own heart out of his chest, leaving him a corpse.
Beyond the sheer terror of the situation, he was deeply stunned by how violently human nature could warp. How could a woman previously known for absolute kindness, wisdom, and empathy transform overnight into someone so ruthless and unhinged?
In his view, Mami possessed absolutely no valid, logical, or religious ground to forbid a love he had quietly nurtured for over eight long years—especially when his father had already granted his full, enthusiastic blessing. What would Daddy think of him now if he cowardled out?
More than that, how could he possibly exist in a world that didn't contain Rayhanah? What was Mami’s obsession with forcing him to marry her friend’s daughter? There was no greed involved on either side; so what was her true motive? How could anyone endure a lifetime bound to a person they felt absolutely nothing for? How could a marriage survive that way?
His desire for Rayhanah wasn't born out of simple lust or romance; he harbored a profound, protective urge to uplift her life, to shelter her, and to give her the security she deserved. If he didn't marry her, she would inevitably fall into the hands of some stranger who would never understand her true worth, her dignity, or her fragile history.
In an era where modern men treated marriage like a disposable shirt—putting it on and tearing it off at a whim even with daughters of immense privilege—who else would look at an orphaned, defenseless girl like Rayhanah and treat her like a sacred treasure? Who else would cherish her the way he and Daddy did?
Before he could stop them, hot, heavy tears spilled from his eyes, tracing burning lines down his cheeks. He reached up to brush them away, only for a fresh torrent to chase them down in a frantic race. This time, he didn't bother trying to stop them. He let them flow freely, discovering that the physical act of weeping somehow eased the violent, burning agony radiating inside his chest.

    The Breaking Point

Over the next four days, whether at home or locked inside his corporate office, Khalipha completely devolved into a ghost of his former self. He cut himself off from the world entirely. He switched off his mobile phones, abandoned his corporate duties, and stared blankly at his desk.
He had previously promised Mami that he would permanently quit smoking Marlboro cigarettes, leaving him without his usual vice to numb his racing mind. Instead, he turned to drinking holy Zam-Zam water as his sole source of sustenance.
Slowly, the overwhelming, chaotic noise inside his brain began to recede, replaced by a somber, heavy clarity. He spent his nights in continuous prayer, performing voluntary Nafilah prayers, begging the Almighty to soften Mami’s hardened heart, because he knew he was completely incapable of executing her horrific command.
Four days crawled by, and Khalipha still hadn't fulfilled Mami’s directive. He kept his phone completely dead, deliberately avoiding any contact with Rayhanah because he flatly refused to become the executioner of her happiness. Yet, not for a single microsecond did he ever consider actually giving her up.
Meanwhile, back in Kano, Mami dialed his number repeatedly until she grew exhausted. She was desperate to finalize her spiritual plans against Rayhanah and Khalipha before Daddy returned to Nigeria, knowing Dr. Mansur would completely dismantle her schemes if he caught wind of them. Dr. Mansur was scheduled to touch down in Nigeria in exactly two days.
Deep in the dead of night, unable to sleep and unable to keep his phone off any longer, Khalipha sat up. He realized with a jolt of horror that Mami was intentionally setting a trap to make him take the entire fall in front of Daddy, keeping her own name perfectly clean.
Oh Allah, what has possessed my mother? he wept silently. What sin have I committed against her that she would willfully demand I throw the entire joy of my existence into a dumpster? Just because Rayha comes from a lineage of poverty and survived a physical affliction, that is her grand justification to deny us a life together?
Has Mami completely forgotten that she has biological daughters of her own? The exact tragedies that befell Rayha could easily strike her own daughters tomorrow! Would she then decree that no man should ever marry them?
What exactly is this wealthy friend's daughter going to give her? Is she going to hand her mountains of gold, or personally fly her to Mecca? As far as Khalipha knew, Mami earned a far more lucrative salary than Dr. Halima, and Halima's husband was merely a politician—a class whose wealth vanishes like smoke. There was absolutely no long-term security Mami could possibly be eyeing.
Yet, Mami was currently prioritizing Dr. Halima’s desires over the sanity of her own husband and son. She had transformed into a bitter, aggressive stranger. Khalipha knew with absolute certainty that the moment he confessed to Daddy that Mami was the mastermind pulling the strings, Daddy would erect an iron wall between them without a single moment of hesitation.
He also recognized that Mami was fully prepared to accept whatever nuclear fallout came from Daddy, recalling her defiant words. He desperately wanted to avoid that; he refused to let his own marriage become the wrecking ball that shattered his parents' lifelong union.
But her final warning echoed layout in his mind: If you refuse to obey me, do not dare blame me for whatever follows. This meant she was fully capable of physically ejecting Rayhanah from the house, casting her out into the cold hands of cruel strangers while he and Daddy were away working.
This terrifying realization struck Khalipha with the force of a physical blow. Before he even realized what he was doing, his hand flew to the center table, grabbed his phone, and powered it on.
Without waiting for the avalanche of missed call notifications and text messages to finish flooding his screen, he furiously typed out a brief text message, sent it straight to Mami, and hurriedly powered the device off the exact moment Rayhanah’s incoming call flash broke across the screen.
Falling back onto his bed, Khalipha broke down, weeping with a violent, unrestrained agony he had never experienced before in his entire life.

    The Conspiracy

At that exact moment, when Khalipha’s text message delivered, Dr. Asma’u (Mami) was huddled inside her private office alongside Dr. Halima. The two women were deeply entrenched in spinning their malicious web against innocent souls, driven entirely by selfish pride and absolute contempt for the poor.
"He has kept his phone switched off until this very moment, and I have been completely unable to reach him," Mami grumbled anxiously. "My greatest fear is that the Doctor is returning tomorrow. I wanted this entire matter buried and finalized before he touches down, so he doesn't disrupt our plans. I swear to you, Halima, that man is fully capable of doing anything to demonstrate his wrath. The absolute minimum he would do is hand me a DIVORCE, and I have already steeled myself for that exact outcome."
Dr. Halima scoffed dismissively, "By Allah, let the market scatter, the merchant has already made his profit! Who on earth would look at you and care that you gave birth to Jawahir, let alone Ibrahim and Khalipha? By Allah, you will be absolutely stunned by how quickly top-tier medical consultants will fight over themselves to marry you! Dr. Mansur has utterly disrespected you for far too long. Mark my words, Asma'u, he holds you in absolute contempt."
Dr. Asma'u’s expression twisted into a mask of deep humiliation and bitterness. If there was one thing she loathed above all else in her life, it was the feeling of rejection...

    3. Character Alignment & Thematic Insights

    1. The Clash of Realities: Destiny vs. Choice

This section highlights a profound psychological conflict within Rayhanah. While her conscious mind and heart are entirely devoted to Khalipha due to his integrity and protective nature, her subconscious dreamscape is completely dominated by Ibraheem. This creates a beautiful, suspenseful dramatic irony: she believes she is fighting for her chosen love (Khalipha), entirely unaware that destiny is already pulling her toward her legal husband (Ibraheem).

    2. The Anatomy of Maternal Tyranny

Mami's transformation from a respected, educated woman into an uncompromising antagonist highlights the destructive power of elitism and classism. Her willingness to risk her marriage to Dr. Mansur and explicitly threaten her son with the weight of her nine months of pregnancy (nauyin nakuda) showcases how deeply her pride has been wounded by Dr. Halima's manipulation.

    3. Key Theme: "Honor Over Origin"

The narrative beautifully sets up a ideological contrast between the characters regarding human worth:

    [Human Worth / Dignity]
           │
├─► Mami's View: Lineage, Wealth, Social Status (Radhiyyah)
           │
└─► Khalipha/Doctor's View: Righteousness, Character, Faith (Rayhanah)

This contrast is perfectly anchored by Khalipha's reference to the Quranic verse: "Inna akramakum 'indallahi atqakum." It justifies his love for Rayhanah not as an act of pity, but as a recognition of her superior spiritual and moral character.
