Description
Chapter One
They were sitting in a car. Ahmad stared at her without even blinking, a smile playing on his lips. Farida adjusted her seating position, placed her hand on his face, and said, "Yah Ahmad, what is this gaze for? Is it as if you're seeing me for the first time today?"
He smiled and replied, "Well, Reedah, if I don't look at you, who do you want me to look at? Would you prefer I go out and stare at other women?"
Instantly, her expression changed. She pouting playfully and began to say, "For what reason? No, I swear, no. You must look at only me; I am enough for you alone. In fact, I pray that the day you use those beautiful eyes of yours to look at another woman, they go blind."
Ahmad opened his mouth and said, "Ah! Has it gotten to that extreme? What would even drive me to look at other women when I have you? Do you know what?"
Farida shook her head.
"In my eyes, you are more beautiful than all other women in the world. Every day, I feel my love and affection for you growing deeper in my heart. Even though an arranged marriage was planned for us as it is customarily done for everyone else, in my heart, I feel that you were always the one meant to be my wife, and you are the choice of my soul. I hope to live with you until the day breath leaves my physical body. I love you, Reedah."
Farida let out a sigh of relief and said, "I sometimes feel like our parents wove this love story even while we were in the womb. My only wish is that you never wake up one day feeling like you don't love me, or loving someone else, or leaving me behind. I cannot live without you, Yah Ahmad. You have completely accustomed my heart to your love."
He took her hand, interlaced it with his, and said, "Only death will part us, Reedah. I promise you I will never leave you until the day breath leaves my body."
Farida smiled and said, "Me too, I love you, my Yah Ahmad. Now, when is your trip?"
Ahmad said, "Tomorrow morning, but if I had a choice, honestly, I wouldn't go. However, they emphasized that it is mandatory for every employee."
Farida took a long breath and said, "May Allah make that the best option. May He take you safely and bring you back safely."
"Ameen, my Reedah. Take good care of yourself, you hear, and..."
A knock on the car window interrupted him before he could finish. He rolled up the glass. Sufyan was standing outside, letting out a short hiss.
"Dad is calling you." With that, he turned to leave. Ahmad opened the door and stepped out; Farida stepped out too, and Ahmad called out to Sufyan.
"What is the meaning of that, Sufyan? Will you never change your ways? Who were you hissing at?" Ahmad asked.
Sufyan shot Farida a vicious glare, and she glared right back at him.
"Stop following me around with that kind of disrespectful look, because I am not your mate. Some people just have an insufferable habit of showing cheap disrespect out of nowhere."
Angrily, Sufyan said, "Don't you dare start, you are right here in the same town."
Ahmad said, "Oh, even in my presence you won't stop this behavior? Where am I? Sufyan, she is older than you, and besides, she is the woman I am going to marry. She is just like me to you. Beware of making me angry."
Sufyan said, "Well, I swear to God, I am just glad this arrangement stopped with you two. And as for you, they ended up giving you the ugliest person in this house. She is bulky like a grain store, or should I say a descendant of the ancient tribe of Thamud. This one will just keep terrifying you. Ugliness speaking for itself, I swear an injustice has been..."
Before he could finish, Farida burst into tears and ran into the house. Ahmad raised his hand and dealt Sufyan a sharp slap.
"You slapped me because of that ugly bag of fat?" Sufyan asked, holding his cheek with his hand.
Ahmad said, "Oh, so you're continuing to say that? Tell me, Sufyan, when will you ever grow up? Who told you that facial beauty or physical figure is what matters in marriage? That is a huge mistake, and if you follow that mindset, you will live to regret it."
As soon as Ahmad finished saying that, he walked past and followed Farida inside.
Upon entering, she threw herself onto Inno's lap in the living room, weeping. Three people were sitting there chatting: Kawu Hamza, Baba Haruna, and Inno.
Baba Haruna asked, "What is the meaning of this with you? What happened?"
Inno lifted her up and asked, "Faridatu, are you okay?"
Kawu Hamza said, "Oh, it will pass. It's just the last-born's usual tantrums acting up."
Through her tears, Farida said, "It’s Sufyan. He is saying an injustice was done to Yah Ahmad by giving me to him, calling me ugly and a descendant of the Thamud." She finished the statement with another burst of tears, right as Ahmad walked into the living room.
Angrily, Baba Haruna said, "What kind of boy is this? Is it because people let him get away with things? I am going to take action."
Ahmad said, "Baba, I already gave him advice, and he will heed it, In Sha Allah. Reedah, be patient. You know Sufyan still has some childish foolishness in him."
Inno lifted her up, wiped her tears, and said, "Oh, I now realize that Sufyanu is just bitter and envious, because among all the grandchildren in this house, nobody resembles me in every way quite like Faridatu. And if it's about beauty, nobody consulted us about our looks. It’s pure envy; maybe he's bitter because he didn't get someone like you. Calm down."
Ahmad said, "Baba, I am here. Sufyan said you called me."
"Yes, but for now, just take Farida out for a bit, clear away the bad mood that nuisance put her in," Baba Haruna said.
Inno said, "That's right, Haruna, well said. Go get some of that cold stuff—ice cream or whatever it's called. And don't forget me, buy me my own for the sake of Allah, because I like it."
Everyone couldn't help but laugh.
Farida lifted her head, laughing, and said, "It's called ice cream."
Inno said, "Whatever, just bring me my own. I love the thing."
Teasingly, Ahmad said, "Inno is quite greedy."
"Go tell that to your parents."
They all laughed and walked out of the living room.
As soon as they went out, they headed straight to Crispy Cream. They went in and placed their order. After it was served and they started eating, Farida asked, "Yah Ahmad, can I ask you a question?"
Ahmad nodded. "I'm listening, Reedah."
"Even I know I am not a beauty. Please, don't you feel in your heart that an injustice was truly done to you by giving me to you? Especially given how fair-skinned and handso—"
Before she could finish, he covered her mouth.
"I don't want to hear that again. Never let yourself think that you aren't beautiful. There is no creation Allah made ugly. Everyone is beautiful, just each in their own way of expressing that beauty. If you don't love yourself and feel you aren't beautiful, do you expect someone else to say it? No, love yourself just the way you are. And I am telling you from the bottom of my heart, I have never seen any ugliness in you. Every day you keep looking more beautiful to me, and I love you just the way you are. Besides, the ultimate beauty resides in the heart, not in the physical body."
Farida let out a breath. "Thank you, Yah Ahmad."
He kept teasing her and playing with her until he made sure her cheerfulness returned. They took pictures, got a takeaway package for Inno, and headed home.
The next morning, as Ahmad was preparing to leave, he called Farida to say goodbye. They both felt they couldn't bear to part ways. Because of this, they stayed on the phone from the moment he entered the car until the network cut off.

Chapter Two
She was sitting in the living room, legs crossed, holding the remote control with an air of pride and arrogance. Suddenly, she felt the remote being snatched from her hand.
Quickly, she lifted her head and saw Sufyan standing right before her. He had already turned and walked to the front chair, calmly changing the TV channel.
Angrily, Farida stood up and approached him.
"What kind of foolishness is this? I was sitting here watching TV, and you just come and snatch the remote from me, and even change the channel?"
He didn't even look at her, let alone answer. His attention was locked on a World Cup football match playing on the screen.
Farida's anger grew. She reached out her hand to grab the remote back, but he quickly swiped her hand away.
At that exact moment, Inno walked in.
"Subhanallah! What am I seeing? Faridatu, Sufuyanu... you two are starting again?"
She finished as she pulled Farida away from him.
Farida pointed at Sufyan with her finger.
"Inno, I swear this boy has completely disrespected me. I was sitting down watching television, and he just came and snatched the remote and changed it."
Inno shook her head.
"You too, it's as if you don't know his nature. But you too, Sufuyanu, this is your older sister. There is a five-year gap between you. Besides, she is the woman your older brother is going to marry. You ought to show her respect."
Only then did Sufyan raise his eyes to look at them.
"Please keep quiet. I am watching TV."
As soon as he finished saying that, he redirected his attention to the television.
Inno walked up and stood right in front of the television screen.
"Well, if that's the case, get up and give me my room. This isn't your father's house."
She snatched the remote control right out of his hand.
Sufyan opened his mouth to say something...
Then the sound of a door opening echoed.
Mama rushed in, her face stricken with terror. Aunty was right behind her.
"Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un!... Inno... Ahmad has had an accident!"
Everyone stood up in sheer panic.
"Where are they?" Sufyan asked quickly.
"At the hospital... come on, take us there now."
Without wasting any time, they rushed out.
Upon arriving at the hospital, they found Abba, Baba, and Uncle standing around looking deeply grief-stricken. Right in the middle of them lay Ahmad, his entire body covered in a white cloth.
Farida walked slowly, as if all the strength had been drained from her body. She knelt beside him, her hands trembling as she lifted a corner of the cloth.
When she caught a glimpse of his face...
Her breath stopped.
"Yah Ahmad... did you leave me just like that? Yah Ahmad, did you forget the promise you made to me? That's it... I am ruined... I am destroyed..."
Her weeping intensified, her body turning cold before she collapsed to the floor.
Inno looked at the people around in utter confusion.
"I don't understand... what does it mean that he is covered with a white cloth like this?"
Baba closed his eyes for a moment before speaking in a sorrowful voice.
"Inno... please be patient. Allah has taken Ahmad's life."
"Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un!"
Dizziness swept over Inno. As she started to fall, Aunty quickly caught her. Farida had already fainted.
Only after Ahmad's shroud was prepared, his funeral prayers performed, and the family returned from the graveyard did Farida begin to regain consciousness.
When she opened her eyes, the first person she saw was Goggo.
In a weak voice, she asked,
"Goggo... where is Yah Ahmad? He didn't die, did he? Please... don't tell me he died."
Goggo gently stroked her head, her eyes filled with tears.
"He is with his Lord, Farida. Please be patient. This is Allah's decree, and no one can run away from it."
Farida shook her head.
"No... it can't be... Yah Ahmad wouldn't leave me... He made a promise to me..."
She burst into a heart-wrenching cry, while Goggo hugged her, wiping her tears away as her own fell uncontrollably.
Three days had passed since Ahmad's death. On this day, Inno gathered all the family members in her living room. From children and in-laws to grandchildren, everyone attended quietly. Nobody knew the reason for this gathering.
Inno adjusted her seating position before speaking.
"I know the grief of Ahmadu's death has still not left our hearts. May Allah have mercy on his soul."
Together, they responded, "Ameen."
She paused briefly before continuing.
"But life does not stop because a person has died. And there are certain traditions that our parents inherited and left for us, which we must not allow to die."
The living room fell silent.
"Everyone in this house knows that since the time of our ancestors, we practice cousin marriages. Not because we lack men or women outside, but because we want family ties to continue to thrive within our home."
She let out a breath.
"Ahmadu—may Allah accept his soul—passed away before his marriage to Faridatu. But this does not mean the marriage is canceled; perhaps Allah has merely increased an opportunity for us."
She raised her head and looked at everyone.
"I have made a decision... this marriage will proceed as planned. However, the one who will marry Faridatu is Sufyan."
A heavy silence enveloped the living room.
Farida widened her eyes, staring at Inno as if she hadn't heard right.
"Inno... what did you say?"
"I mean what you heard."
Farida burst into tears. "I swear I cannot do this! Sufyan is my younger brother. How can I marry him? I'd rather die unmarried."
Sufyan also shook his head in absolute disagreement. "I cannot do this either, Inno. This is impossible. Where would I even take her? I swear I won't marry her."
Baba shouted a sharp warning command. Instantly, the living room went dead silent. "Since when did children start talking back before elders finish speaking? Bring yourselves to order!"
Inno pouted, tears welling up in her eyes. "Well, Haruna, let them be. Let them say what they want. But I will not allow the tradition of this house to die in my hands. I have nurtured this home, I watched how our parents ran it, and I will not be the reason for its collapse." She finished speaking while wiping her nose with the edge of her wrapper.
Baba Haruna adjusted his posture and said,
"That is true, Inno. We are backing you one hundred percent. No one can oppose you in this house. And as for age or seniority, it has no bearing whatsoever on marriage. The Messenger of Allah (SAW) married Nana Khadija (RA), who was older than him by years. That is part of the Sunnah as well. Therefore, let me neither hear nor see any defiance—this marriage is non-negotiable; it must take place."
Sufyan raised his head calmly and said,
"Baba, I am not ready for marriage yet. And right now, I have no interest in getting married."
Baba Haruna shouted another sharp reprimand at him.
"If you have no interest, we your parents do. And it is mandatory for you to follow what we have decided."
Saying that, he made a move to slap him.
Abba Shuaibu blocked his hand and said,
"However, Elder Brother, if we look at this matter, he is only twenty years old, while she is twenty-five. It feels a bit mismatched."
Baba Haruna shot him a fierce glare.
"Had you not said this in my presence, I would have thought it a fabricated lie. This marriage is non-negotiable. It will happen just as Inno requested."
Kawu Hamza cleared his throat before saying,
"Still, we ought to pause and examine the situation of these youngsters. Since neither of them wants this marriage, they shouldn't be forced."
Immediately, Inno faked tears, wiping them with the edge of her veil.
"I knew it. Haruna is the only one who truly loves me in this house. As for the rest of you, you might as well say I should just drop dead—I can see you're trying to plot against me as a family."
In unison, they all began to apologize and pacify her.
Baba Haruna asked,
"Inno, do you mean this marriage should be solemnized on the exact date that was originally scheduled for the other one?"
Inno nodded.
"Yes, absolutely. That is the day I want everything to happen."
Baba Haruna said,
"Very well then. No problem. In Sha Allah, preparations will continue starting today."
Inno smiled faintly and said,
"Good. May Allah bless you all. I am certain my late husband lying underground is feeling happy and proud of you all."
With that, the meeting adjourned.
The women of the house didn't utter a word. They knew Inno's nature all too well; anyone who dared oppose her will only brought disaster upon themselves. Therefore, they swallowed what was in their hearts, each carrying her own distress, praying to Allah to bring a way out of the situation.
Farida found no peace. Ever since the meeting in Inno's living room, crying had become her closest companion. Whenever she remembered what had been decided, her heart filled with sorrow and frustration.
Ever since childhood into adulthood, nothing disgusted her more than a guy her own age claiming he loved her—let alone being told that someone she clearly considered a younger brother would become her husband.
She had long dreamed of the kind of man she wanted to marry—a man of integrity, calmness, dignity, and care; a man full of wisdom and maturity. These were all the traits the late Ahmad possessed in abundance.
As for Sufyan, he had never fit into the category of people she could look at with such eyes. His unsociability, excessive silence, arrogance, and haughtiness meant they had never shared a peaceful space since day one. Even when they exchanged greetings, it was strictly out of obligation.
She was lying down, her head resting on Aunty's lap, weeping bitterly like a small child.
Aunty gently stroked her hair to comfort her.
"Farida, please be patient. Stop crying like this. We are servants of Allah; we do not know where our good lies. Perhaps this is what Allah has chosen for you for your own good."
Farida lifted her red, swollen eyes from crying.
"Aunty, what good is in this? Marrying this boy whom I am older than? Someone I can't even stand looking at because of his character? Being told I am his wife? I swear this is not good... it is pure punishment..."
Before she could finish, Aunty placed her hand over Farida's mouth.
"No! Don't you ever say such a thing. Don't be hopeless. Everything is in Allah's hands. Be patient and keep praying. Allah is the Turner of hearts."
Farida burst into tears again, while Aunty held her close and comforted her.
The night was deep. Around two in the morning.
Total silence enveloped the house. Nothing could be heard except the whistling of the wind and the ticking of the wall clock.
It was during this quietness that Inno felt something gently touch her shoulder.
Her heart skipped a beat.
She opened her eyes in a start, her heart pounding heavily as if it would burst through her chest.
When she lifted her head, her eyes landed on a long, dark cloth standing right before her. It was so tall that she couldn't see where it ended. It seemed to have neither a beginning nor an end.
A freezing chill seeped through her bones.
She began to back away, trembling.
"Who... who... who is that? ... Astaghfirullah... Astaghfirullah..."
Her voice refused to come out properly.
"I seek refuge in Allah... Please don't kill me..."
Wherever she moved, she saw the dark cloth moving closer to her, as if hovering without feet.
Suddenly, a terrifying voice shook the room.
"If you dare scream..."
The voice paused for a few seconds before continuing in a terrifying, booming echo.
"...we will kill you..."
"...we will eat your flesh..."
"...we will gouge out your eyes..."
Inno's body went completely limp. She felt as though she couldn't even breathe, while sweat poured down her despite the chill of the night.

Chapter Three
"Please... don't hurt me, I beg of you," she said in a trembling voice.
The phantom figure moved again, as if it were speaking. She heard it say:
"We will spare you. But only if you stop the marriage between Farida and Sufyan. Because there is no good in that marriage at all. We are the djinns residing inside Farida. If you allow that marriage to be solemnized, we will transfer into your body."
Inno clutched her body tightly, burying her head between her knees as she shook violently.
"No... the wedding is canceled! I swear it's canceled! The marriage will not happen. As for me, what do I have to do with courting catastrophe?"
"Do you promise?"
Inno nodded her head frantically.
"Yes... I promise. I swear by Allah I will stop the wedding."
"We are leaving. But if you fail to stop this wedding, we will return and execute what we said."
"I beg of you... I am no match for you. Please forgive me."
Instantly, the shadowy figure withdrew.
Inno remained frozen in that position. For a long time, she couldn't move; only her lips trembled as she kept repeating:
"Forgive me... I never meant to stir up trouble... please forgive me..."
Only when she felt absolute silence did she lift her head slowly. In the dim light of the room, there was no trace of anyone.
From that moment on, sleep completely abandoned her eyes.
When she heard the call for the Fajr prayer, she sprang up from bed. She headed straight for Baba's quarters, clutching her wrapper and shoes in her hand.
Right at that moment, Baba Haruna emerged from his room to head to the mosque. When he caught sight of Inno in such a state, he stopped dead in his tracks.
"Subhanallah! Inno, are you alright?"
Wiping her nose, Inno said,
"Uhm... just let it be, Haruna. Forgive me. Stirring up trouble was never my intention. Today I had an encounter... I had an encounter with a ghost."
Baba quickly rushed over to her.
Baba Haruna swiftly grabbed Inno and led her inside. He called Mama and Farida and told them to sit with her.
As he was about to step out, Inno called out to him.
"Haruna... when you finish praying, all of you come back here. I have something to say."
She spoke in a voice heavy with exhaustion and terror. Baba Haruna nodded.
"Alright, Inno, In Sha Allah."
With that, he went out.
Just as Inno commanded, upon returning from the Fajr prayer, all of them gathered...
Analytics Summary
- Literary Genre: Hausa Contemporary Fiction / Domestic Drama with Supernatural Elements.
- Core Themes: Family tradition (cousin marriages), grief and loss, forced marriage vs. autonomy, generational authority, and supernatural manipulation/psychological fear.
- Key Character Dynamics:
- Ahmad & Farida: Represented an initial dynamic of deep, affectionate, and idealized love cut short by sudden tragedy.
- Sufyan & Farida: Characterized by mutual hostility, age-gap friction (Farida is older), and a forced romantic transition that neither party desires.
- Inno: The traditional matriarch whose rigid adherence to family customs drives the central conflict, ultimately subverted by supernatural terror.
Comments and Conclusions
The narrative expertly weaves traditional Hausa domestic politics—specifically the pressure of family elders regarding endogamous marriages—with unexpected plot twists. The sudden, tragic death of Ahmad serves as a major turning point, shifting the tone from a sweet romance to a high-tension domestic crisis.
Inno’s unwavering insistence on substituting Sufyan as the groom highlights how patriarchal and traditional authority structures often override individual consent and emotional compatibility. However, the introduction of the supernatural element (the phantom entity threatening Inno) adds a gothic, suspenseful layer to the genre, subverting the absolute power of the matriarch through psychological coercion. The story concludes its sample chapters on a cliffhanger, leaving the power dynamics of the household completely fractured and setting the stage for intense conflict once the family reconvenes after dawn.
