Description
“Is everything ready?” she asked while looking at their faces.
Abla was the first to answer her.
“Kebab with chips, beef shawarma, burger, pancakes…” she listed almost ten items.
Hajjaty nodded slightly and added,
“I don’t want to interrupt your work. Time is running out. Hurry up and finish.”
“Has Hajiya Saratu’s breakfast been sent?” she asked.
Safa quickly replied,
“I’m just about to take it to her. Today I’m on duty for her section.”
Hajjaty nodded.
“Okay. Prepare fresh fruit for me and strong tea.”
The one called Sarah answered, “Okay.”
Without wasting time, she arranged the fruits neatly in a beautiful wooden tray along with a cup of tea. She handed it over respectfully and left.
After she left, conversation broke out among them.
“Safa, so you’re the one on duty in Aunty Jarabatu’s section? You’ll be in trouble,” Abla said.
They laughed.
Sophia added,
“Hajiya Saratu is not someone to joke with. Last time I took her food, she accused me of cutting the chicken leg badly. She even said she doesn’t trust us and who knows, maybe we poisoned her.”
They burst into laughter.
“She’s very difficult and trusts nobody. Except her husband. That useless son-in-law living in his in-laws’ house without shame,” Sophia added.
Safa said,
“If I get the chance to stay in this house, that’s exactly what I’ll do. That inheritance is not small. That’s why I pray every day that God gives me the heart of someone from this family.
If I marry him, I won’t even sleep properly. I’ll keep praying for our marriage to last forever. Especially his mother, that proud woman, she doesn’t tolerate nonsense and hates outsiders…”
They stared at her mockingly until she finished.
Abla said,
“You don’t have sense. I’ve suspected your brain isn’t working well. Even the nonsense we talk is better than you.
It’s not like I don’t like Owais, but they say when something is beyond you, you should accept it.”
Safa frowned.
“Just pray for me. I’ve read in Hausa novels how maids marry their bosses or their sons.”
They laughed loudly.
Sophia said,
“Safa, you’re suffering in your mind. It rarely happens in real life. Rich marry rich. Poor marry poor. I’m afraid you’ll get heart attack loving someone who doesn’t love you.”
They laughed again and continued working.
---
Abla said,
“What pains me is that this family has few heirs. With all this wealth, only about fifteen heirs.”
Sophia replied,
“They actually want children. But it’s not by choice. It’s their destiny. They give birth, but the babies don’t survive.
Even Prime Minister Hateem has no son. He and his wife, Princess Mujeedat, have only two daughters.”
They all felt pity.
Safa said softly,
“May God forgive us. We thought they didn’t want children, but it’s a test from God.”
---
Later Safa prepared Hajiya Saratu’s breakfast and took it to her room.
The room smelled of expensive perfume.
“Come in,” Hajiya Saratu said.
She was sitting on her large bed, wearing a jalabiya, working on her expensive Apple laptop.
Without looking at her, she said,
“Once you’re done looking at me, put the food on the table and leave.”
Safa greeted her respectfully.
Hajiya ignored her.
After Safa left, she stopped working and started eating quickly like someone starving.
Suddenly her husband’s voice came:
“You never joke with food.”
She looked up at him.
He came out of the bathroom wearing only a towel.
He looked like a wrestler — tall, muscular, and handsome.
She frowned.
“Why are you walking around in a towel? What if a maid saw you?”
He smiled and said,
“When will you stop being jealous?”
She said,
“Never.”
He said lovingly,
“My bride, mother of my children, my pride.”
She smiled slightly.
---
Later, Sophia went upstairs to the twins’ bedroom.
She knocked.
“Come in,” one said.
One twin was standing half-naked in shorts. The other was lying on the bed.
She said nervously,
“Good morning, sir. Where should I put the coffee?”
He replied coldly,
“On my head.”
She froze.
The other twin said,
“Is that how your parents taught you? Entering without saying Assalamu Alaikum?”
She apologized.
They ordered her to go out and greet properly.
She greeted them about fifteen times until she cried.
Finally they allowed her inside.
She tried putting the coffee down.
“Don’t put it there. Go and make another one. This one is cold.”
She left crying.
They didn’t care.
---
Later, Zaid asked,
“When are we going back to America?”
Zayn replied angrily,
“Grandfather forced us to return. Owais is enjoying abroad while we’re stuck here.”
Then he talked about a woman he loved.
“She’s different. I’d give all my wealth to marry her. But she refused marriage.”
Zaid said angrily,
“How can you talk about the same woman I want?”
They argued.
Then Sophia returned with coffee.
They said,
“We don’t need it.”
She left heartbroken.
---
Zayn insulted their father.
Zaid was shocked.
He hated hearing insults about their father.
But Zayn continued angrily.
Zaid remained silent.
He stared at the mirror.
Thinking about only one person:
